Peter Laviolette and Paul Maurice are switching spots again as Mo replaces Lavs in Carolina after Lavs replaced Mo a few years ago... wow, fascinating stuff. We were big fans of Laviolette as he got a lot of offense out of this team and ranked very high in our Coach Rankings... not sure this is going to be a good move for fantasy GMs but guess if it gets guys like Eric Staal and Joe Corvo out of their slumps, then bring it on!
Sean Avery has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL for conduct detrimental to the league...we called it yesterday (read more below in our Distraction). Seems like an indefinite suspension is a bit much but the league is obviously sick of his antics. The fantasy impact? We can't see him missing more than two or three games.
Only guy stupider (is that even a word?) than Avery last night was Scott Hartnell throwing his glove at Ryan Malone when he was on a breakaway, resulting in a penalty shot... in a tie game... with 16 seconds left... [video]
Craig Anderson has started the last 3 games for Florida and is proving to be the better option for Pete DeBoer by posting a 1.99 gaa with a .943 sv% on the season. The coach has no choice but to keep going with the hot goalie.
Sergei Kostitsyn looks to be the odd man out as he was a healthy scratch last night. 'Healthy scratch'...one of the worst phrases for fantasy owners. He was pegged as one of our breakouts this year...so ummm sorry about that. We are still high on his potential so he might be a nice trade target in keeper leagues. His value isn't getting any lower than it is right now.
Another healthy scratch last night was given to Radim Vrbata... so maybe Rick Tocchet is starting to come around to what Barry Melrose figured out a while ago... this guy's not that good?
Was checking out some KHL stats and saw that a guy named Yaromir Yagr #68 is doing pretty well over there, never heard of him but sounds familiar. Speaking of witness protection program, a goalie named Raymond Emeri also caught our eye, maybe a NHL team will take a chance on this guy?
From the I'll-give-my-support-but-start-the-other-guy department:
- Andy Murray stated Manny Legace is his number one...even though Chris Mason has been on fire and is expected to start Wednesday
- Ken Hitchcock referred to his goalies as 1 and 1A, even though Steve Mason has been out-playing Pascal Leclaire by a country mile. Would you rather be the 1 or the 1A? We would be 1A and tell everybody the 'A' stood for awesome.
- Wayne Gretzky said Ilya Bryzalgov is his number one, even though Mikael Tellqvist has only let in 14 goals his last seven games. Actually...we'll believe Gretz on this one, this is Tellqvist we're talking about here.
Speaking of goalies, Marty Turco had a great game last night. Just in case your brain can't comprehend those words in the same sentence we'll say it again...Marty Turco had a great game. He stopped 36 of 37 shots, picked up the 'W' and the 1st star. Maybe he has turned the corner? We hope not...it's fun poking fun at his troubles every night. Yeah, we're a bunch of jerks.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which gives you a consolidated list of injuries):
JS Giguere showed he had no problems with his cramping issues we told you about yesterday. Start 'im, if you got 'im.
Raffi Torres' knee is not recovering from the surgery he had last year so he's shutting it down for a while, this could be a long-term thing.
Sounding like Nikolai Khabibulin should be back soon from his groin injury, the team is hoping he's ready to go by this weekend.
Speedy recovery of the day award goes to Justin Williams who was expected to be out 4 to 6 months with a ruptured achilles but he called BS on the doctors timetable and is looking to return in the next week (about a month or two ahead of schedule). If you have room you might want to stash this guy on your bench cause if he can stay healthy he's worth it.
When a player comes back from injury and get injured again...that's a major red flag. Well raise those red flags Danny Briere owners. The Flyer returned from his groin injury only to leave again in the second with discomfort in the groin. Cross your fingers.
Also returning from injury last night, much more successfully, was Alex Tanguay.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today? Yesterday, one of our Scouts commented on predicted the fact that Sean Avery and Dion Phaneuf might have a bit of a feud going since Dion is dating Avery's 'sloppy seconds'. Seems like Avery might be a FHS reader because he pretty much said the same thing to TSN yesterday. He was obviously trying to get Phaneuf off his game but we really got to give Avery credit. Would you want to get this guy mad at you?
The NHL acted quickly (that doesn't sound like them) and suspended Avery indefinitely for his comments. Addition by subtraction right there...and of course, the Stars pull off the big 3-1 win Avery-free. Although by that math the Rangers would be playing a lot better this year. Not a perfect theory.
