Injury Updates - Oct 1st, 2010

First day on the job yesterday and we were slacking off already, so here are your injury updates for the past two days.

There are rumours that Jordan Staal's recovery time from his foot injury could be more like 10 weeks instead of the 5-6 weeks that was originally estimated... so he could miss a good chunk of the start of the year and is not someone you want to be counting on.

Dustin Byfuglien has been held out of the last three days of practice with an ankle injury... it doesn't sound too serious as the team is hopeful he can play in one of the final two pre-season games.

Thomas Vanek left last night's game early with a neck injury but the reports are that he's fine and will be practicing today... actually he's likely already practiced and is home having a latte by now.

More after the jump...

Carlo Colaiacovo is nursing a hip flexor that he suffered last Friday and according to the team he's not expected to skate for another week... this could linger as Carlo has never been known to heal quickly.

Tim Thomas got into his first action of the pre-season on Wednesday and stopped 20 of 24 in a loss to the Caps.  He's finally getting better after offseason hip surgery but he could be rusty for a while and the Bruins will probably take it slow... will be a great chance for Rask to get off to a quick start.

Also coming back after offseason hip surgery and making his pre-season debut Wednesday was Ville Leino of the Flyers and he looked pretty good picking up two assists.  Leino's a sexy pick for poolies this year as people seem pretty confident that he can carry-over his playoff magic into the regular season... we're a little skeptical as we're not sure this guy can bring it for an entire 82 game schedule.

The Caps are resting Semyon Varlamov as he has a "little something, and it's nothing major or serious" (that's a direct quote from Coach Bruce).  It may not be major or serious but it has us a little wigged out as Varlamov really struggled to overcome a groin injury last year, hurt his knee while rehabbing the groin and all told missed about two months of action.
