Blogger's Breakouts - Dallas Stars

Today we wrap up the Western Conference with the Dallas Stars and we welcome Art Middleton from Defending Big D as our Dallas expert.  Art is new to the Blogger's Breakout game but if he produces anything similar to what they do at DFD, we're golden.  Make sure you pay Defending Big D a visit to check out more of Art and the rest of the team's work.

We asked Art nine fantasy relevant questions about the Stars and the NHL in general.  Follow the jump to read his answers...

Q1) Stars Breakout of the Year?

Steve Ott had a 22 goal season last year and that number along with his assists total could be higher this season.  Of course if you're in a pool where penalty minutes count, he's a lock to have 130 to 150 of those as well.

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on the Stars?

I would say there are two players who could surprise this year.  First there is Brandon Segal who had five goals and ten points in 19 games played with the Stars after only managing two points in 25 games with the Los Angeles Kings earlier in the season.  Segal's style of play may be perfect for Marc Crawford's short shift, hard skating system and as one of only a few right handed shots on the Stars, his value is higher on Dallas than it would be on most other NHL teams.  The same can be said for Adam Burish... Right handed shot, has decent speed, works hard and he too will also get a chance to prove himself as capable to play with a line centered by Brad Richards or Mike Ribeiro.

Q3) Breakdown Player on the Stars?

Loui Eriksson's goal total dropped in 2009/10 but his assist total was nearly doubled and he once again set a career high in total points.  So is he a sniper?  Is he a play maker?  Or is he someone who just benefits from meshing really well with Jedi-master Brad Richards?  In his first three years as a pro, he's never been lower than 30 points so even if he does drop in production, it won't be horrific..  But it could drop all the same.

Q4) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?

I may be crazy (may be?) but I really think Dion Phaneuf will be a 20+ goal and 40+ assist man at some point in his career - he was almost one in 2007-08 - so why not this season?  Ever since he was traded, he looked more comfortable as a hockey player in the 26 games as a Leaf than he ever really did as a Calgary Flame playing under Sutter.

Q5) Who are your First Five Picks in a Fantasy Draft?

Ovechkin, Crosby, H.Sedin, Stamkos & Malkin

Q6) Best Value for Money Fantasy Goalie?

Marty Turco wasn't really that bad in Dallas last year, he was just someone who had a swiss cheese defense playing in front of him.  Now he's playing behind a very talented Blackhawks club that will put up offensive numbers to support him, a strong defense that won't allow opposing teams to get second, third and fourth chances on goal against him, and he has a chip on his shoulder with something to prove to himself and to his critics.

Q7) Taylor or Tyler?

Tyler Seguin is going to be the better pick for this season I think, but it you're in a keeper league, Taylor Hall is the way to go and will end up with a better career.

Q8) Your Stanley Cup Pick?

If Vancouver doesn't win it this year, they'll never win it... Or at least it feels that way to me.  It's now or never for Roberto Luongo really.  I'm already seeing where people are saying Luongo is overrated.. I don't feel that's the case yet, but if he can't help guide Vancouver to a Cup final with the kind of team he has playing in front of him, then I think you can more than make that argument.

BONUS) We've been pretty critical of the pick-up of Kari Lehtonen by GM Joe.  Are we just bitter because he's ruined past fantasy teams of ours or is he as bad as we think?

I don't think he's as bad talent wise as anyone thinks... But right now he is being treated with kid gloves in terms of his health.  The moment he showed a little tightness in his hamstring this preseason, he was sat for a day or two.  If he stays healthy, I feel he'll be a very solid goalie.  I just don't think anyone is crazy enough to assume he'll be healthy the entire season.  It's a gamble by GM Joe for sure.  If he stays healthy, I think he'll prove to be a steal and win a handful of games for the Stars.  If he keeps having injury issues like he has had, then it's a huge whiff by Nieuwy.

Great work by Art... if you enjoyed this BB or if you're looking for another excellent way to kill time we recommend you check our Art's work at Defending Big D.
