Anders Lindback dominated our Fantasy Stars of the Week last week and chased that down with a 28 save shutout of the Islanders last night. That's back-to-back shutouts and he's now 7-1-2, 2.18 & .931 on the season and we'll say it again, it wouldn't surprise us in the least if there's a goalie controversy in Nashville when Rinne returns as it happens every year with Barry Trotz's team.
Three-pointers from the Avs Matt Duchene, Tomas Fleischmann & Paul Stastny last night and all three are rolling... Duchene has 9+7=16 in his last 12, Flash has 2+5=7 in his last five and Stastny has 4+5=9 during a five game point streak. All this and they're missing Stewart, Galiardi and Hejduk right now.
Sounds like Evgeni Nabokov could be making an NHL return soon as his agent is sniffing around for an interested team. Speculation has Tampa & Washington as two possible destinations but remember that he'll have to clear waivers so it doesn't matter who signs him, all teams will have a shot at him... so while he would fit nicely with those teams, some other team could grab him and stick him on the bench. Yahoo! hasn't added him as an eligible player yet, so you eager beavers who want to snatch him up will have to wait.
Canada made their first round of cuts for their WJC team and there were a few surprises... Avs 2010 1st rounder Joey Hishon getting dropped surprised me as I thought he had a chance to have a breakout performance since he's one of the top scorers in the OHL on a points-per-game basis (17+25=42 in 22 games) and had success in international events in the past. I also thought Flames prospect Ryan Howse with his 47 goals in the WHL last year and 22 so far this year would find a way to crack the roster. The rest of the cuts will come tomorrow.
Troy Brouwer is still maddingly inconsistent but he's seemed to lift his production a little lately, likely due to more opportunities with Hossa & Kane being out... he had three points last night and has 7+2=9 with 22 shots over his last 11 games.
Marty Turco with another disaster outing last night as he gave up four goals on 10 shots and got the hook early in the 2nd period. Crawford relieved him and unfairly ended up taking the loss. We're ready to call Crawford the #1 as we think he'll hold it for a while but as I mentioned in the podcast, I also wouldn't count out a typical 2nd half Turco revival... he has a history of those.
Steve Mason got the express yanking last night and he was pulled after allowing two goals on four shots after four minutes. This guy is prone to more bad outings like this than pretty much any other goalie.
Jarome Iginla with two goals last night to extend his point streak to eight games where he has 5+6=11 & 34 shots. Hopefully you either held on to him or got him at a discount when all the talk about his demise was rampant.
Mark Giordano is an underrated guy that we like, we've been talking him up lately cause he just keeps producing... another assist last night and he now has 1+7=8 with 12 PIMs & 16 shots over his last eight games.
Jason Demers hasn't been as productive as I thought he'd be this year but maybe he's starting to come around as he has 1+3=4 with eight shots over his last four games. The problem with him is all you'll really get out of him is assists, PPPs & a little help with plus/minus.
Jonathan Quick is getting into a groove as he has started the past seven in a row for the Kings and had what will likely be his game of the season last night in a 51 save shutout of the Red Wings. His season is probably not getting enough hype as he's 2nd in the league with a 1.83 gaa, 3rd in wins (15) & 4th in sv% at .933.
Three assists & a plus-3 for Drew Doughty last night and hopefully this gets him going as his slump (pointless in 10 games coming in) is likely drowning some GMs (present company included).
Bryan Little with two goals last night and he now has 5+1=6 & a plus-4 over his last six games. It hasn't been a great season for him so far as he's only on pace for 45 points but ATL has a high-powered offense (rank 6th in goals & 4th in PP%) so just by association and playing on a scoring line, he should get his.
