HEADS UP: It's Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in the US... happy respective day to you wherever you are... this means we have day games today, the earliest starting at 1pm EST, so get those lineups in early
I've seen pretty much all of the Habs first two games this year and man does Tomas Plekanec have to carry a big workload... dude plays in all situations (including the point on the PP) and is no doubt the best player on the team (1+2=3 & plus-3 yesterday). He led the Habs forwards in ice-time last year at 20 mpg and he's averaging closer to 23 so far this year.
Nice goal for Max Pacioretty yesterday, I'm really liking him this year but as others have pointed out he'll need to overcome having to play on the Habs 2nd line with Gomez & Gionta. Maybe with Cammalleri out for a bit he'll get a shot on the Plekanec line, that's where he needs to be.
1+1=2 for Yannick Weber yesterday and with a few injuries on the Habs blueline already, he might actually be given a legit shot. I think that's all this kid needs, so keep an eye on him.
David Desharnais with nearly 17 minutes of ice-time (2:35 on the PP) and he had a PPA yesterday... that's a good sign, so I'm telling you again to take a look at this guy.
Troubling news here as Evander Kane only played 10:34 for the Jets yesterday... not cool Claude Noel. Something has to give there.
Kris Letang off to a flying start for the Pens with a goal on six shots in 29 minutes last night and that gives him 1+3=4 with points in each of his first three games. I thought he might be a candidate to regress this year after a huge season last year with 50 pts & 101 PIMs but he's looking determined so far.
Devan Dubnyk was the star for the Oilers with 33 saves on 34 shots and all this while the Oilers were shorthanded for over 16 minutes(!) during the game. Not surprised that he got the call for the opening game as Tom Renney has been dropping hints all summer so now we'll see if he comes back with DD in game two or goes with a rotation.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with a goal in his debut... he lined up with Hall & Hemsky so the Oilers are going to give him a chance to show what he can do before they decide if he'll go back to Red Deer... so far, so good for those of you that are hoping he stays in the league.
Our boy Jay may be on to something here, he's been chirping about Cam Barker all offseason and in the Oilers opening game Barker was 3rd on the team in ice-time (21:16) and led the team with 5:20 on the PP.
Tomas Vokoun is expected to get the start today for the Caps in game two.
Blair Betts is heading back to the Flyers as his waiver claim by the Habs has been voided due to Betts failing his physical. This is a bit of an issue since the Flyers at the 50 contract limit and means they may not be able to keep Sean Couturier beyond 10 games. Man, the Flyers really are the worst team in the league when it comes to managing the cap.
