Devan Dubnyk saw action in his first game in the last five for the Oilers last night and stole the show as he stopped 40 of 41 for the win. He may have to wait his turn until Khabibulin cools down but it's a good sign that he's look very solid to start the season.
The streak for Brian Elliott is over as he gave up two goals on 17 shots last night and took a loss against the Flames... look for Halak to get the start in their next game.
Edmonton announced that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins wasn't going back to Jr. and he played in his 10th game last night. I'm surprised at how well the kid is doing and how he's handling playing against men. Gabriel Landeskog played his 10th game last night as well and Sean Couturier reached 10 on Thursday.
Great line last night for Martin Havlat with 2A, plus-1, four PIMs & six shots. He has an assist in each of his four games so far this season.
The Preds traded Cal O`Reilly to the Coyotes for a pick. I like O`Reilly but I don't get the impression that Barry Trotz thought very highly of him and Trotz and Tippett seem pretty similarly-minded so we'll see how much of a chance he gets in PHX... I have low expectations.
Alexander Steen with his sixth goal and ninth point on the season and he leads the Blues in goals, points & shots.
Flames rookie Roman Horak with his second straight two-pointer and he played a season high 17:39 last night... he's mostly seeing time on the 3rd/4th line.
Ryan Smyth with 1+2=3, plus-2 with two PIMs & three shots last night... he's on pace for 65 points this year and that would be a big surprise as he hasn't cracked 60 in the last four seasons.
No points in 10 games to start the year for Magnus Paajarvi and he's seen his ice-time drop lately, down to just 10:31 last night. I'm a huge believer in this kid but it's not looking promising for him right now.
Have to mention this as Jay is a big fan... Cam Barker with his first point for Edmonton last night with a PPG. He's been seeing a regular shift and decent PP time but the production is a little slow to develop.
It's been a frustratingly slow start to the season for Henrik Zetterberg but he scored last night on seven shots so hopefully that will get him going. That was just his second goal on 38 shots so far this year so he's due for a few more to start going in.
Joe Thornton was held without a point in his first three games but has a five game point streak since where he has 3+5=8 & plus-7.
Cam Ward with a 30 save shutout of the Hawks last night and he is quietly off to a strong start with a 4-2-2 record and 2.34 & .928 averages.
Eric Staal was pointless again and now has just two points and a minus-6 over his last eight games. This is a very slow start but don't panic.
The Jets put Brett MacLean on waivers and likely he'll be claimed by Phoenix and sent to the AHL. He played in five games for the Jets but only saw more than 10 minutes in one game so I would have liked to have seen him get more of a chance.
The Kings are expected to activate Drew Doughty from the IR for tonight's game and send Viatcheslav Voynov to the AHL but he should be back up when another injury strikes.
Here are the rest of your AHL ups & downs: Matt Calvert (up), David Savard (down), Maksim Mayorov (down), Jeff Petry (up), Nazem Kadri (down) & Patrick Maroon (down).
