Monday's Daily Dosage - Nyquist, Neuvirth, M.Green...
HEADS UP: Need one more league?... we're still looking for more GMs for the FHSPL, we've got at least two auctions happening this week... check here for details
Gustav Nyquist had a big game with 2+1=3 on five shots last night and he was rewarded with bus fare to Grand Rapids following the game. The kid showed well in camp and looks like he's on his way to being a good one but given that this is the Wings, we'll all have to be super-patient.
Johan Franzen also had 1+2=3 for the Wings.
Mathieu Perreault with another goal last night and he finishes the preseason with 3+2=5 as he makes yet another bid to impress the Caps brass. I don't really see it happening as Coach Bruce seems to like his players, how do you say, BIG... and MP is somewhat less than that.
Michal Neuvirth stopped 28 of 29 for the Caps and he wasn't joking when he said he was going to try to give Vokoun some stiff competition as he had a 1.35 gaa & .949 sv% in three preseason appearances. Vokoun was 3.26 & .870 in three games.
Mike Green with a goal & assist last night but people seem to be down on him heading into this season... it's only exhibition but here are the Caps dmen PP TOI from last night:
M.Green - 9:23
Wideman - 8:09
Hamrlik - 3:36
Carlson - 2:08
Alzner - 0:05
Orlov - 0:00
The Sabres can carry a few extra players while they're in Europe so things could change next week but Luke Adam is on the roster and while Derek Roy is easing himself back into the lineup, Adam will center the top the line between Vanek & Pominville. We're really high on this kid, great numbers his final year of Jr. and in the AHL last year where he was the ROY.
Here are your notable cuts from the past 24 hours: Calvin De Haan (NYI), Matt Donovan (NYI), Tyson Barrie (COL), Paul Postma (WPG), Janne Pesonen (WPG), Gilbert Brule (EDM), Teemu Hartikainen (EDM), Tomas Tatar (DET), Ben Scrivens (TOR) & Richard Bachman (DAL).
A good list here from Robert Vollman at Hockey Prospectus of some sleepers and bounceback candidates but how can you call it the NHL's Top 10 Breakout Candidates when there are guys like Miikka Kiprusoff, Jimmy Howard & Scott Gomez on the list?... haven't those guys already broken out? Just semantics I suppose.

I own Neuvirtth in a dynasty league and I’ve been getting an unusual amount of interest in him lately so I don’t think it’s just you that feels that way.

So I drafted yesterday...
Didn’t really feel like doing a fan post for it though. Anywho, it’s a Yahoo! standard H2H winners league. I never, ever, ever even think about drafting Crosby (one of the few things in my fandom that affects my fantasy drafting) and yet, when he was still there in the fifth round I couldn’t resist. So, whaddya think?
1. (5) Martin St. Louis RW
2. (20) Ilya Kovalchuk LW,RW
3. (29) Antti Niemi G
4. (44) Rick Nash LW,RW
5. (53) Sidney Crosby C
6. (68) Brent Burns D
7. (77) James Reimer G
8. (92) Marian Hossa RW
9. (101) Mark Streit D
10. (116) Teemu Selanne RW
11. (125) Ondrej Pavelec G
12. (140) Mikko Koivu C
13. (149) James van Riemsdyk LW
14. (164) Patrice Bergeron C
15. (173) Alex Steen C,LW
16. (188) Kevin Bieksa D
I only have 3D, but when Crosby goes on the IR, I’ll pick up Hedman or Clitsome. I think I got a few steals with Streit, Selanne, and Koivu. Not too sure about Steen but like the dual eligibility. Am not loving my goaltending trio but it’ll do.
Agreed, the goalies could be better but they could be worse as well.
There is a running theme of the people who know what they’re doing getting steals on guys like Crosby, Streit, Selanne & Koivu in Yahoo! leagues.
If Crosby comes back, it could be epic… otherwise it should still be solid as you can always find a decent C on the wire.

Lots of value to be had in later rounds if you know where to look.
PPG in round 10? yes please. Elite D in round 9? sure, why not. Oh and another (almost) PPG guy in the 12th, that’ll do pig, that’ll do. I generally don’t draft centers early but if Crosby is there at the end of the season I win. As for goalies, there’s always a few good ones that pop up midseason that nobody expected and I’ll go with 4G and 3D until things settle down.
Great, great stuff.
I can’t see how you’re not in contention or the title. Even if Crosby only plays half the season.
I’m not a big fan of Steen’s but if he doesn’t work out there will be tons of guys similar to him on the wire. Koivu at 140 is crazy.

Is Troy Brouwer the next Alexander Burrows?

Also, it seems Marcus Johansson is the Caps “first” line center. For now.
This isn’t good news for Ovechkin or Backstrom owners.

I’d like to see him make it as well but he’s a longshot… really needs a change of scenery. Would probably thrive with someone like the Islanders or Panthers.

Paraphrased from Down Goes Brown
Reviewing NHL11 he said that they added a miniature mode. Just go to options and then select Canadiens. Seriously though, he kinda needs to be on a scoring line and that’s not really an option with the Caps. As a third of fourth line center he’s a bit out of place. There’s ben some rumblings about him moving to wing – that might help.
yea if he could move to the wing that would help.
Maybe he would fit in on a second line wing, this guy is probably pretty got on the power ply also.
