Wednesday's Daily Dosage - Backlund, Thomas/Rask, Schenn...
Good & bad news for the Flames as Jarome Iginla (back) sounds like he's improving and will be ready for opening night and Brendan Morrison (knee) is back practicing and he is a possibility for the opener but they very well could hold him out a little longer. The bad news is that Mikael Backlund has a broken finger and is out for six weeks. He was expected to start as the #1C but others are a lot higher on him than I am, so I don't think this hurts your team too much.
Claude Julien says he'll rotate Tim Thomas & Tuukka Rask this year and go with the hot goalie eventually. This was not totally unexpected and basically how the Bruins started last year but then recall that Thomas started 8-0-0 with three shutouts and 1.39 & .959 averages through his first nine games and there was no way they weren't going to ride him after that. But the split was still only 57/29 for Thomas/Rask and I could see something a little closer to even this year. I still like Thomas a lot in leagues that don't heavily weight saves and I think Rask is probably the best backup to own in the league.
Brett Connolly & Mattias Ekholm have survived final cuts and will be on the opening night rosters for the Bolts & Preds respectively. Check out all the surprises in our Training Camp Heroes post which I'll be updating through to opening day.
Brayden Schenn will likely be demoted to the AHL for a game for some salary cap trickery purposes and then he's expected to be back up and in the Flyers lineup shortly thereafter.
The Islanders signed Ryan Strome to an ELC but they may still send him back to Jr. today. The Hawks Brandon Saad also agreed to an ELC yesterday and he'll start the season on the Toews line... we'll see how long that lasts.
Dustin Penner is day-to-day with a LBI and is questionable for the Kings two games in Europe, Scott Parse should take his place on the top line if he can't go.
Sean Avery has been waived by the Rangers and it sounds like he'll look for work in Europe versus heading to the AHL.
The Cancucks claimed Dale Weise off waivers from the Rangers. They have to keep him on the roster so he should get a look but I doubt he'll see more than 4th line duty.
The Leafs made a deal with the Devils and picked up David Steckel yesterday for a 4th... he's only fantasy worthy if a faceoff specialist is valuable to you.
Your notable cuts from the past 24 hours: Jeremy Morin (CHI), Dana Tyrell (TB), Dmitri Orlov (WSH), Cody Eakin (WSH) & Mattias Sjogren (WSH).

Erixon
Sounds like Staal will be out a month. So the Rangers already called on Erixon. He’s flying out to Europe after practice with the Wolfpack today to join the team.

alot of young guys making there clubs this year.
suprised to see Shenn get sent down to the Ahl i didnt expect this to happen.
Nice to see my team pick up steckel he isnt the best player but he is big hits and wins faceoffs a ton nice signing.
Another big thing is Avery wonder if he will ever get another shot in the NHL, i heard he might be going over to Russia.
I doubt Avery gets another shot in the NHL, the Rangers were his only hope.
Schenn should be back up in a day or two and he was just sent down for cap reasons.

yeaa shenn will be back up just found out some stuff.
There were bonuses for him if he made the team right away so sending him down will take away those bonuses and help the flyers cap situation.
Pretty crappy for the kid.
You played well enough to earn the $$ in your contract but we’re going to use a loophole to screw you over because we don’t know how to manage a cap.

that's Philthy for you...
they also failed to draft their contract to Talbot to be cap-compliant
after the free agent frenzy had passed and he had already agree to sign on with the Flyers, they dropped his annual salary $250,000 — to make it cap-compliant
i know they overpaid for Talbot, but a quarter mill — per year — is still REAL money
and it was THEIR mistake
yet they made the player eat it
come on, Holmer — get your head out of your ass
They’ll probably buy him a condo under the table to make up for it.

Backlund won’t have much value fantasy wise, but he’s a great young player for the Flames. I hope he recovers quickly and return to continue developing his skills.
I think what you meant to say was...
but he’s a great the only young player for the Flames.
Actually they have Baertschi now, so let the rebuild begin!!!

Hahaha its true they dont have much young players but, id be pretty happy with these two guys Baertschi looks real good and so does Backlund.
It has to be one of the worst systems in the league. Once Iggy is gone… it’s going to be a rough few years in the Southern Alberta.

is this the year...
they sell Iginla at the deadline?
(outta be — they are running out of time, and so is he)
They probably should but I don’t think they move him ever. Fans couldn’t handle it.
They would be even better off trading Kipper.

The cupboard is definitely bare for the Flames. If Feaster (little faith in this guy) plays it right, we could have a quick turn around. So many factors would contribute to this though. At some point they’re going to have a to take a harder look at guys like Iginla, Kipper, Bouwmeester, Tanguay. I think if these players have good statistical years, there could be some interest around the league. Staying optimistic!
Optimism is good but I can’t see how they can have a quick turnaround.
No young assets to trade. Aging stars and a few big contracts that have hand cuffed them. In three years I have a feeling we’ll be seeing them in the cellar.

Yes, Iginla is aging, but the dude had 86 points last year. He’s still one of the best players in the league. You don’t think they could get something back that’ll start the rebuild for them?
They could definitely get a nice piece or two back. I’m just not sure the Flames will do it. Fan favourite and all.
