Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #4
The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.
Three Stars of the Week:
3rd Star, from the Vancouver Canucks, numero 23, Alexander Edler... Edler was up there in points with the top forwards this week, scoring 1+5=6 in four games, and he led all players with 5 PPP. May be a top 3 scoring d-man in the league by the end of the season. Definitely worth the minus -5 on the week. FHS Votes: 1 second, 2 thirds.
2nd Star, from the Chicago Blackhawks, numero 88, Patrick Kane... led all scorers with 2+5=7 on the week and added a very healthy +5 and 12 SOG. Had two 3-point games and his line has looked dominating at times. This guy is a superstar. FHS Votes: 1 first, 3 seconds, 1 third.
1st Star, from the Minnesota Wild, numero 37, Josh Harding...Harding had an all-star week, allowing only one goal in each of his three games, all wins, while sporting a phenomenal .968 SV%. If you're one of the very, very few who actually A) had him rostered to begin with and B) dressed him for all three games this past week, you're looking pretty genius-like right now. Harding has been a touted prospect for years, but he missed the entire 2010-11 season with a torn ACL and MCL. The Wild re-signed him in July regardless. With Niklas Backstrom turning 34 this year, Harding is in a good position to eventually take over the number one role on a traditionally defensive team in Minny. Or maybe he already has... FHS Votes: 3 firsts, 1 second, 1 third.
Honorable mention: Teemu Selanne (Four points is nice, but 28 PIMs?? That's more than he's had in some entire seasons), Dan Hamhuis (4GP, 2+2=4, 10 PIM, 3 PPP)
Rookie Star of the Week: Sean Couturier, PHI - 3GP, 3+1=4 and a +4. All of this with 3rd line minutes and no PP points. The kid is going to have a long and fruitful NHL career.HM: Adam Henrique (Five points in three games and a spot as the team's #1C. Enjoy the ride here.)
Breakout Star of the Week: No clear winner here, so we'll go with a quartet of breakouts in Derek Stepan, NYR (2+3=5, 3 PPP, +4), James van Riemsdyk (2 GP, 2+3=5), the above mentioned Adam Henrique , and Tyler Seguin (2GP, 3+1=4, Hat Trick). This is Seguin's third appearance as Breakout Star in only four weeks, so I think he's safely graduated out of this category.
Breakdown of the Week: Again, tough to pick just one player, so we'll mention all nominees: Steve Mason, CBJ (UGH), Ryan Getzlaf, ANH (just one assist and a minus-5 in four games of work), Eric Staal, CAR (0 points and a -3. The mother of all buy lows), and Ryan Miller, BUF (28.20 gaa!!). Antti Niemi, SJ (3GS, 0 wins. 5.29 GAA and .847 Save%)
Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): Gotta go with our number one star, Josh Harding, MIN (28% owned). Rec'd by FHS's own Diomedes7 in last week's Free Agent and Trade Targets column.
HM: The mysterious Adam Henrique (2% owned, no harm in grabbing him if you want to gamble on his L1 assignment continuing, or have the bench space to wait and see).

nice
dig the post, jsuites
so…over the past 24 hours i have gotten (low-ball) offers for Josh Harding and Sean Couturier. note: if you want a deal on a player, the time to pounce is BEFORE he goes off. (-;
Nice. I realized last night that Harding was still available in one of my keeper leagues, so I grabbed him. I’ve already got a Thomas/Lundqvist/Rask/Neuvirth tandem going there, so I guess I’m just getting greedy now. :)
ha ha. “greed is good.” (in fantasy, not real life, Mr. Gecko)
five tenders is prob too many though from a roster mgmt perspective
can you trade Neuvy to the Vokoun owner in your league?
Harding is going to see a lot of time b/w the pipes this year
I already tried dealing Neuvirth to Vokoun’s owner, but Spezza + Neuvy was understandably not quite enough to pry Kovalchuk from him. I may go back to that drawing board though.
But unless I deal Neuvirth, I really have no intention of playing Harding at all. We have a 164 GP max for goalies, so 82 Boston games and and 65-70 Lundqvist games leaves me 12 – 17 starts left over for Neuvirth. This is the plan anyway. Harding is nice injury insurance, but I fully expect Backstrom to reclaim starter duties for the most part this year. Most solid proven vets will react favourably to pressure from a younger gun like Harding. But I can afford the bench spot for now to see what happens.
HM for Breakdown
Antii Niemi: 3GS, 0 wins. 5.29 GAA and .847 Save%
He’s a slow-starter, so he could be a buy low candidate, but current owners can’t be happy
