Fantasy Fortnight: Who's Cold? Staal, Stafford, Johnson, Hamonic, Miller...

Dear Eric,
Start scoring.
Sincerely,
Your fantasy owners

Today we'll take a look at some cold players from the last two weeks (that's a fortnight) and see if their streaks are legit.

We looked at who was on fire a few days ago in our Who's Hot post.  Check it out here.

Statistics are up to and including games played on Sunday November 6th, 2011.

FORWARDS

Eric Staal - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -6
If you own Staal we don't need to tell you about his struggles.  If you don't, you've probably heard the guy who does complaining that his first round pick is playing like he belongs on the Blue Jackets.  He has only two points in his last ten games and is on pace for a whopping minus-94.  Ouch.

Ville Leino - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -2
A switch to the top scoring line didn't get Leino going.  It's amazing he went from a potential 60 point guy to somebody you should think about cutting bait on.  This is going to be a contract the Sabres regret for a long time.

Patrik Berglund - 5 gms with 1+0=1 and a -3
Going back further he has just two points in ten games.  52 points last year as a 22-year-old gave us big hope that Berglund would be taking the next step this season.  Maybe Hitchcock gets him going?  He's too talented for this to continue.

Milan Hejduk - 6 gms with 1+0=1 and a -1
Five points in his first six game then only two in the eight games since.

Drew Stafford - 6 gms with 1+0=1 and a -2
Like Hejduk he started strong (five points in first five games) but has been killing fantasy teams since (one point in eight games).

Other cold forwards...
Derick Brassard - 6 gms with 0+0=0 and a -8
Dustin Penner - 6 gms with 0+0=0 and a -4
Steve Downie - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -6
Josh Bailey - 5 gms with 0+1=1 and a -2
Matt Moulson - 5 gms with 0+1=1 and a -3
Jiri Hudler - 5 gms with 0+0=0 and a 0
Alexander Semin - 5 gms with 0+1=1 and a -3
Tyler Bozak - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -1
Michael Grabner - 5 gms with 1+0=1 and a -2
Magnus Paajarvi - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a 1
Simon Gagne - 4 gms with 1+0=1 and a -1
Dave Bolland - 7 gms with 1+0=1 and a -3
Valtteri Filppula - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a 3

DEFENSE

Jack Johnson - 6 gms with 0+0=0 and a -4
JMFJ has been MFing terrible lately... actually all season.  He only has two games this year with a point (both two pointers).  He's going to have an uphill climb to top the 42 points he put up last season.

Lubomir Visnovsky - 7 gms with 0+0=0 and a -4
68 points last year to lead all d-men and this year he's on pace for just 22  pts with a minus-41.  WTF.

Jamie McBain - 5 gms with 0+1=1 and a -6
After a few early season healthy scratches it was looking like McBain was getting back into the swing of things.  He was getting decent ice time and picked up three points in five games.  Well that was before this ugly five game streak.  I had some high hopes he would top last year's breakout 30 points.

Travis Hamonic - 5 gms with 0+0=0 and a -2
His stat line above only tells half the story as Hamonic has only one point this season and none in his last nine games.  He's still getting some PIM's so he's not a total waste but nothing like the 30 pts / 150 PIM potential he teased us with last season.

Joe Corvo - 4 gms with 0+0=0 and a +2
He had three points in his first six but nothing since.  He's a pretty streaky guy but he's usually good for around 40 point at the end of the season.  He has had some trouble producing outside of Carolina and in the past and he's 34 years old now.

Other cold defenders...
Victor Hedman - 5 gms with 0+0=0 and a -6
Tim Erixon - 3 gms with 0+0=0 and a -4
Pavel Kubina - 6 gms with 0+0=0 and a -4
Joni Pitkanen - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -6
Roman Hamrlik - 5 gms with 0+0=0 and a -3
Brett Clark - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a -3
Drew Doughty - 4 gms with 0+1=1 and a -2
Ed Jovanovski - 6 gms with 1+0=1 and a 0
Tyler Myers - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a 0
Tomas Kaberle - 6 gms with 0+1=1 and a 0
Marek Zidlicky - 5 gms with 0+1=1 and a +3

GOALIES

Ryan Miller - 3 gms with 0 wins, 4.84 & 0.857
You won't get too many fortnights this terrible with Miller in your lineup.  The Sabres are struggling right now but plan on them and Miller reversing their fortunes soon.

Jaroslav Halak - 2 gms with 0 wins, 3.08 & 0.893
Ken Hitchcock in on board and he does very good things for goalies (he turned Steve Mason into an MVP candidate, didn't he?).  Halak has looked terrible so far this year (one win in seven games, 3.35 gaa and .865 sv%) so the coaching change can only help.

Semyon Varlamov - 5 gms with 1 wins, 3.39 & 0.869
Much of the damage came from that game against the Stars where he gave up seven goals.  That game dropped his sv% from .920 to only .906.

Other cold tenders...
Cory Schneider - 3 gms with 0 wins, 3.16 & 0.905
Mathieu Garon - 3 gms with 1 wins, 6.17 & 0.838
Tomas Vokoun - 4 gms with 1 wins, 3.9 & 0.847
Steve Mason - 5 gms with 2 wins, 4.02 & 0.853
Jonathan Quick - 5 gms with 1 wins, 2.73 & 0.901
Antti Niemi - 5 gms with 2 wins, 3.43 & 0.887
Jonas Hiller - 6 gms with 1 wins, 2.98 & 0.91

Johnson

A Kings blog did some advanced stats analysis on Johnson last year and found that he was the single worst defenseman on the team and that all other D-men suffered when they played with him.

He is great on the PP, though. But yeah, in “real hockey” terms he’s…an adventure.

Brassard

any hope for this guy?
he seems terribly miscast as a bottom 6 F.

There is hope… we’ll see who the next coach is.

good point
at least he dodged the Hitch bullet

Cam is more optimistic than me.

I used to be a big believer but I’ve lost all hope. I’ll start paying attention once he start doing something.

i hear that, Jay.
just that the guy was deeded to me in a (very deep) league where i took over a team as a replacement owner.
i can’t trade him w/ his value at a nadir, and yet he has too much upside to cut for the scrubs on the wire.

In a deep league he’s a good guy to stash away, I suppose.

He’s kinda like Filatov (another Blue Jacket flameout) where he has some potential but there are probably better bets to take in most leagues on the wire.

Well, Fliatov is a bust. Plain and simple.
He’s never been any good.
Although I am concerned, I wouldn’t put Brassard in that category.

Brass put up 47 points last year (in 74 games — 0.64 ppg — which is decent).
And he played at 0.81 ppg pace a couple years prior (ie, a 60+ point pace over a full year)
Filatov hasn’t sniffed those #s.

How many sub 50 point seasons do you need to see out of Brassy before you give up on him.
