Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #9

The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.

Three Stars of the Week:

3rd Star, from the Calgary Flames, numero 12, Jarome Iginla... 4+2=6, plus-6 and 17 shots in three games, and things are definitely looking up. He may not repeat last year's 86 points, but he's nowhere near washed up just yet. FHS Votes: 2 seconds, 3 thirds.

2nd Star, from the Vancouver Canucks, numero 1, Roberto Luongo.. three games started, 3 wins, 1.62 GAA and .974 SV%. We're only two weeks removed from Cory Schneider taking home this same honour here at FHS, and in fact Schneider played over half the game in Luongo's recorded W over Colorado this week. If you own both goalies, congrats. Otherwise, this week belonged to the Luongo owners. FHS Votes: 1 first, 1 second, 1 third.

1st Star, from the Washington Capitals, numero 74, John Carlson...1+6=7, 12 shots, plus-3, 2 PPP in just 3 games and he's officially loving the Hunter era. Carlson played one season under Hunter with the London Knights, in which Carlson netted 76 points in only 59 games. Not too shabby. Another nice trend for Carlson owners: he saw 25+ minutes TOI in only 4 of his first 23 games this year. In his past 5 games, his lowest TOI was 25:10. FHS Votes: 3 firsts, 1 second.

Honorable mention: Dennis Wideman (3 GP, 2+3=5, 9 SOG, 4 PPP), Brian Elliott (2 GP, 2 Wins, 1.00 GAA, .962 SV%, 1 shutout), Ryan Kesler (3 GP, 2+2=4, +2, 4 PIM, 3 PPP,11 SOG), Brendan Morrison (3 GP, 2+5=7, plus-2, 2 PPP)

Rookie Star of the Week: Matt Hackett, MIN with 2 wins in 2 games with a lights-out .974 SV% and 1.01 GAA. It's a shame that he's got two great goalies in his way.

HM: Jared Spurgeon (3 GP, 0+4=4, +2, 3 PPP)

Breakout Star of the Week: We'll give you four this week: Jiri Hudler (3 GP, 4+2=6), Sam Gagner, EDM (3 GP, 2+2=4, 2 PPP), Artem Anisimov (3 GP, 3+1=4, 13 SOG, 20 PIM!!), Dennis Wideman (3 GP, 2+3=5, 9 SOG, 4 PPP)

Breakdown of the Week: Mike Smith, PHO. 3 games, 11 goals allowed, 4.70 GAA, and .833 SV%. He's still sporting a digestible 2.49/.923 on the season, but he's been playing over his head for a guy with a career .908 Sv%, so this week was just part of the inevitable correction.

DHM: Zach Bogosian (no ponts, -6), Patrick Marleau (4 games, no points), Alex Goligoski (2 games, no points, -4)

Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): Olli Jokinen, CAL (27% owned). Jay had this to say about Jokinen: I don't really trust this guy but he's on pace for almost 60 points with some PIM's and shots. He should be owned in more than 27% of leagues.

HM: Three players making their second appearance in this week's post: Hackett (5% owned), Morrison (2% owned), Hudler (8% owned)
