Thursday's Daily Dosage - Giroux, Whitney, Giguere
Well, that was fast. Claude Giroux surprised a lot of people last night when he was inserted in the lineup so quickly after being diagnosed with a concussion. He then proceeded to set the world on fire with 1+3=4, 2 PPP, plus-1 and 4 SOG. He even threw in 8 FOW for good measure. I'm sure there are a lot of owners who didn't dress him this week and I feel your pain.
Scott Hartnell, Jaromir Jagr, and Kimmo Timonen were all very happy to have Giroux back as they all had 2 points each.
James van Riemsdyk has been ice cold lately. No goals in his last nine games and just 2 assists in that span. Reminds me a lot of last season where the kid just disappeared for stretches.
The Ray Whitney show just keeps on going. Another PPG and an assist for the soon to be 40 year old. To quote a sportscaster from somewhere "you can't stop him, you can only hope to contain him".
Eric Staal is back to his old tricks putting up no points and a minus-3. That's three straight point-less games for the former NHL star.
Another 1+1=2 for Viktor Stalberg to give him 2+3=5 over a three game points streak with 4 PIMs thrown in for some icing.
Corey Crawford got a start for the first time in a while and stopped 20 of the Hab's 21 pathetic shots for the win. Take that, Ray Emery!
Speaking of goalies, Brian Elliott lost for the first time in what seemed like years. He made a particularly stupid play on the second goal for the Avalanche basically passing the puck to Cody McLeod to put it past him. He should have got the primary assist. Hey, good news for Jaroslav Halak owners.
Three straight wins for Jean-Sebastien Giguere and his peripherals are ridiculous with .931 sv% and 1.87 gaa. It's a shame that he's really only playing because Semyon Varlamov is dealing with a minor injury.
38 saves and another win for Roberto Luongo and he's now 7-0-1 in his last eight.
Danny Cleary with an assist and he's rolling right now with 4+6=10 over his last nine games. He had just 7 points in his previous 23. He still won't give you much on the PP but ride him while he's hot.
Henrik Sedin with an assist and he's got 1+15=16 over the last nine games. Damn that's a lot of assists.
Logan Couture with two goals on 7 shots last night. He's playing at a 66 point pace which would be an improvement of 10 points from last season.
Joe Thornton with two assists and 5 shots last night and he's on a four game point streak with 1+4=5 over that span.
Also on a four game points streak is Patrick Marleau with 3+2=5 over that span.
Brent Burns with his first multi-point effort since October and he really needed the 1+1=2. Hopefully he can build on that.
Martin St. Louis returned last night and scored a goal while wearing the college hockey cage. I love that look.
Whole lot of AHL Recalls: Justin Pogge, Riley Nash, Brandon Pirri, Michal Repik, Evgeni Dadonov, Micheal Haley, Anders Nilsson

Lauri Korpikoski
this one is for Cam, another goal another game winner. Korpikoski also manufactured the game tying goal to Klesla with a sprawling pass from behind the goal, in the ’Yotes comeback against Carolina.
Honestly this was the first Phoenix game I have seen all year, I just don’t find them to be a terribly intriguing team, mostly just boring, however Korpikoski was the best player on the ice for either team.
What is it I am missing why is he a 3rd-4th line player?

He used to be a big prospect on the Rangers, nicknamed Korpedo. But he proved that he just isn’t very good. Any player can look like good for a game or two, but his body of work speaks a lot more about the type of player he is than one or two games.

mostly this was just a joke as I have been bantering it about with Jay and Cam but honestly how can you say that a 25 yr old is a bust and not very good.
and please don’t point to the New York fan base as proof of anything
perhaps the shine is off but really, if he provides another 40 point season, which he may at the pace he is on, from the 3rd and 4th lines of a terrible offensive team then it seems to me he just wasn’t ready at 21.
like I said this was the first time I have ever really sat and watched a Phoenix game and have only the one impression but it just seems a rather narrow view that 3 yrs into a career confidence cannot be gained and improvement made.
not saying you are wrong just that I saw a pretty strong performance last night and age 23 (2009-10) seems early to be called a bust
last season from the 3rd & 4th line while everyone agreed it was a fluke due to the unsustainable shooting % he racked up 40 points
this season shooting % is down but SOG are up with similar production which is an indication to me that he has grown in confidence.
and sometimes that is all you need confidence and a chance.
apparently I have become Lauri’s #3 fan (assuming his parents still root for him after his catastrophic failure with the Rangers)

The reason I’m not a fan is his upside is nothing.
He might be able to pull off a few fourty pointers… maybe even approach 50 in the right situation but he’s never going to bust out and be anything more than that. I’d rather use a roster spot elsewhere.
