Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #11
The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.
Three Stars of the Week:
3rd Star, from the New York Rangers, numero 10, Marian Gaborik... 4+1=5 in 3 games to take over the lead in the Rocket race. Gaborik has been coming up huge for the Rangers lately, clicking big time with line mates Derek Stepan and Artem Anisimov. FHS Votes: 1 first, 2 seconds.
2nd Star, from the Colorado Avalanche, numero 35, Jean-Sebastien Giguere... 3 games, 3 wins, only five goals allowed for a 1.59 gaa and .951 sv%. When you get those numbers from a guy who was a free agent in most leagues until a few weeks ago, it's gold. Giggy's been through a lot the last few years, so it's nice to see a bit of a late career resurgence from the former Conn Smythe winner. FHS Votes: 1 first, 1 second, 2 thirds.
1st Star, from the Boston Bruins, numero 63, Brad Marchand... 4+2=6, plus-4, an SHG, and maybe the best stat of them all is 2 GWG in 2 games. Not that the first goal in an 8-0 romp is important but still, big week for the kid. Love the 80% shooting% too. As Cam pointed out, Marchand is at plus-25 right now which puts him on pace for something insane like plus-60 on the season. Ridiculously, he is also on pace for 72 points and 144 PIM. FHS Votes: 2 firsts, 2 thirds.
Honorable mention: Curtis Glencross (3 GP, 4+1=5, plus-5), Roberto Luongo (2 wins, 1 SO, .961 sv%, 1.34 gaa)
Rookie Star of the Week: Nazem Kadri, TOR. Pretty weak week for the rookies... two goals in two games is enough to take home the prize this week.
HM: Richard Bachman (2 wins)
Breakout Star of the Week: gotta go with Brad Marchand again here. His owners must be feeling pretty good about their late round selection right about now.
HM: Kyle Turris (3 pts in 3 games. Finally!)
Breakdown of the Week: Bobby Ryan, ANH. Maybe others are more deserving here but this guy has got to be killing fantasy teams all over the place. 10+7=17 for the season with just 2 PPP. Disgusting. Hopefully next year the dude won't be taken in the 1st year with 50 goals or 80 points expected from him.
DHM: Jose Theodore, (0 wins, 4.56 GAA, and .833 Sv%), Eric Staal (no points, minus-3)
Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! Leagues): Viktor Stalberg (6% owned, 2 GP, 2+2=4). On pace for 49 points and 172 shots after six points over his last five. He's getting bounced around all over the lineup but if he could ever secure a scoring line role 50 points could be in the cards.
HM: Stu Bickel (0% owned, 0+4=4, 11 PIM, and plus-4)

Nice work. Quick question though, how does 2 firsts, 2 thirds (Marchand) beat 2 firsts and 2 seconds (Gaborik) when you combine voting?
Well I didn’t vote for Gaborik so obviously my votes count for the most!

My fault, apologies! Gabby actually received only 1 first, not 2….I have now corrected this egregious error and fired myself.
And if anyone’s curious (I completely understand if you’re not) I’ve been using a points system similar to what the NHL does for their awards voting:
1st star vote = 10 pts
2nd star vote = 7 pts
3rd star vote = 5 pts
Stu Bickel
should have had a little consideration in the rookie star scenario
that young man has a serious attitude problem ;-)

You’re probably right. It was a pretty terrible week for the rooks so he could have snuck in there.
