Didn't watch the NHL Awards last night (no interest) but did check out the voting results this morning... I've already said my peace regarding the John Carlson Calder Snub but still shocked that he finished 5th and he wasn't even close to the top 4. Was glad to see Corey Perry take home the Hart, dude deserved that. [Puck Daddy with the complete voting results]
Hawks GM Stan Bowman with some interesting words yesterday, when asked about his depth at center he said he thought Brandon Pirri was close to making the jump to the NHL. This kid has kinda come from nowhere as he was a 2nd round pick in 2009 who had a great freshmen season at RPI (11+31=42 in 39 games) and then stepped right up to the pros last year with 12+31=43 in 70 games for Rockford. It was the finish to the season that really caught my attention as he had 4+13=17 over his last 13 games. Bowman also confirmed that Alexander Salak will start the year as the #2 goalie, looking forward to seeing this kid get a chance as he's shown well in each league he's played in over the past three years. Denied rumours say that the Flyers and Ilya Bryzgalov have an agreement on a contract but that it can't be announced due to cap rules. Some are saying that he's going to get a long-term deal at around $7M per season... yikes, that's insane. So much for the trend last year of not spending much on your goalies.
There was just a quick note about David Perron's recovery in an article about the Blues yesterday... he's said to be improving but hasn't started his offseason training program. That's no good as it's been over six months since the concussion and he really can't train at all... scary stuff. [Jeremy Rutherford]
