Here's a bombshell for ya... Kristian Huselius lifts weights!!!... but not very well apparently as he tore a pectoral muscle and that will likely keep him out for 4-6 months. He missed half of last season with ankle & hip/groin injuries so this guy's body seems to be breaking down. You might as well forget about him until January. This leaves two top six spots open and we're hoping that they'll be filled by Matt Calvert and by shifting Derick Brassard to the wing. I suppose starting Ryan Johansen on the wing is another possibility but probably not preferable.
Chris Pronger is putting it out there that his recovery from back surgery has him doing a lot of resting and not as much preparing for the season and he's skeptical if he'll be ready to go at the beginning of training camp. This guy had knee, foot & hand injuries last season so you'd hope that he had his quota of injuries for a while but this season looks like it could start rather ominously.
Brandon Sutter re-signed with the Hurricanes on a three-year deal... I had high hopes for him heading into last season after 21+19=40 in 2009/10 but his production really slipped and he seems to be better suited in a checking line role than to be counted on for scoring.
Man, things are going from bad to worse for the Avs dmen prospects as they signed Shane O`Brien yesterday... he doesn't have fantasy value (unless you need PIMs sprinkled with some hits & blks) but by my math that's seven NHL dmen that they Avs have signed... plus Cumiskey will get signed... and they have Holos on a two-way. So I don't see how any of Cameron Gaunce, Stefan Elliott & Tyson Barrie is getting more than a sniff of NHL action this year.
The Sens signed the 6th overall pick, Mika Zibanejad, to an ELC... I think I've made it clear that I'm not a fan, this guy may be a big physical player that can skate but his numbers to this point don't indicate to me that he has the ability to put many points on the board. We had him ranked at #21 amongst 2011 draft eligible prospects from a fantasy perspective in our fantasy prospect rankings.
Mathieu Perreault re-signed with the Caps on a two-way deal... he was close to making the team on a full-time basis last season but lost out to Marcus Johansson and this summer the Caps added Brouwer, Ward & Halpern and re-signed Laich... so his window has closed. I'm not sure the Caps really liked him much anyway as they prefer size up front and Perreault ain't bringing that to the table.
The Devils re-signed RFA forward Vladimir Zharkov to a two-way deal. He's played two half-seasons in the NHL but scoring has been a bit of a bear as he only has two goals to show for 78 NHL games so far... he's still relatively young (23) but I don't see a lot to get excited about here.
Bobby Sanguinetti re-signed with Carolina on a two-way deal... he's been a decent point-producing dman in the AHL for a few seasons but it doesn't seem like the Hurricanes have high hopes for him. You should lower your expectations if you own him as well.
The Hawks have re-signed dman Brian Connelly to a two-way deal... he's probably only of interest to me as he was 6th in the AHL in scoring by a dman with 11+41=52 but he'd need about three or four injuries to Hawks dmen to get himself a call-up.
