Thursday's Daily Dosage - Purcell, Korpikoski, Conklin...

Tampa re-signed Teddy Purcell to a two-year deal... he had a nice breakout season last year with 17+34=51 in 81 games and showed he was willing to shoot the puck (196 shots) which enhanced his fantasy value.  He confirmed that the season wasn't a fluke by putting up 6+11=17 in 18 playoff games, good for 3rd on the team.  He's a decent secondary guy but just understand that his upside is limited on the 2nd line and #2 PP unit.

Lauri Korpikoski was re-signed by the Coyotes on a two-year deal... he was a real surprise last season with 19+21=40 for PHX while seeing time on the top line with Doan.  So is he for real or was this a fluke?  I say fluke.  He had an unsustainable 18.4% sh% and goalies only stopped .885 of the shots they faced at ES when he was on the ice, that also won't continue.  I advise to expect a dropoff this year.

As was speculated, the Wings did sign Ty Conklin to play backup to Jimmy Howard this season... he was weak last season in STL (3.22 & .881) but is only two seasons removed from recording 25 wins in 40 games during his last stint in Detroit.  I make no promises but it wouldn't surprise me if Conklin surprised everyone this season... but its totally dependent on Howard's health & performance.

As we mentioned the other day, the Hawks were planning on letting Chris Campoli walk after his arbitration hearing in August but the two sides got special permission that will let him become a UFA now.  For some reason he's likely to be a sought after player and someone will overpay him.

The Caps are going to terminate the contract of 2008 1st rounder Anton Gustafsson... he'll be missed... not really.  Dude was a bit of a reach when the Caps drafted him, hasn't shown any real upside since and seems to prefer toiling in Europe (he played in Switzerland last year) as opposed to developing in North America.

Patrick Lalime has decided to retire... now the debate begins, will he be remembered for:

  1. Bursting onto the scene with Pittsburgh (14-0-2 to start his career);
  2. Giving up two short-side goals to Joe Nieuwendyk; or
  3. Being the worst goalie in the league over his final few seasons (9-26-5 record with Buffalo over the past three seasons).

Personally, I have to go with #2.
