Sunday's Daily Dosage - Sheppard, RNH, M.Stone...
The Wild traded former 9th overall pick (2006) James Sheppard to the Sharks for a 3rd rounder. He's coming off missing a whole season due to a knee injury and had just 2+4=6 in 2009/10. He needed a fresh start but he's going to need more than just that... if you've been holding on to him this long then might as well wait to see how he looks in San Jose but I wouldn't be holding your breath for much as he hasn't shown much of the potential that he showed in Jr.
Nashville has placed Brett Lebda on waivers and reports say that they may intend to buy him out. Now I was assuming that Lebda was only going to play a 7th dman role this year anyway but this keeps opening things up for as many as four rookie blueliners (pick from Jonathon Blum, Ryan Ellis, Roman Josi, Mattias Ekholm & Teemu Laakso) to make the squad out of training camp as Weber, Suter & Klein look like the only locks right now. I'm looking for a nice season from Blum and maybe a surprise one from Josi.
Canada held the first of two scrimmages for the WJC summer camp [recap & summary]... Ryan Nugent-Hopkins played hero with two late goals, fitting that the game was in Edmonton, but not to be outdone Sean Couturier had two assists. According to Guy Flaming from The Pipeline Show, the most impressive players were Devante Smith-Pelly (1+1=2) & Mark Stone (2+1=3). Stone is a low profile guy that doesn't get much attention as he was a 6th round pick of the Sens in 2010 but is coming off a 106 point season in the WHL this year. We have him ranked at #275 in our Fantasy Prospects DB and we're probably even guilty of underrating him.

Sheppard
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him revive a bit in SJ. As the scoring forward that he’s supposed to be, he’s never been given the chance to do so. His best year was his rookie year, where he played small-time minutes but did ok with them. Then all of a sudden he was given more ice time, but a heavy defensive role, starting in his zone nearly 60% of the time.
All in all, if the Sharks give him an offensive role even with limited minutes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sheppard come alive a bit.

Definitely could see Sheppard improve on a scoring line in SJ but it with their top six I’d say he’ll have a very tough time grabbing a job.
He’ll need an injury or two… and even then his upside is fairly limited. If he played at a 40 pt pace I’d be impressed.
