Thursday's Daily Dosage - Modano, Malkin, Dekanich...
Mike Modano officially hung up the skates yesterday... he definitely stuck around a few years too long but that doesn't take away from his legacy. As we do when a superstar retires, let's shine a light on his greatest fantasy season. Now Modano was never a 100 point player but I always thought of him as one of the most reliable guys in that 2nd tier of fantasy players, in fact he scored right around a point-per-game or better for 12 straight seasons between 1991/92 to 2002/03... I love that kind of consistency. And plus, he did this throughout the prime clutch & grab era. His best season was 1993/94 where he had 50+43=93 & 281 shots in 76 games during the Stars first season in Dallas.
Matt Frattin had two goals for the Leafs (second was an ENG) as he attempts to grab one of the Leafs last open forward spots.
Chris Stewart had 1+2=3 and Marc-Andre Bergeron with 1+1=2 in a Blues-Bolts preseason tilt.
Mika Zibanejad had the OT winner for the Sens but from what I saw & read, he wasn't that impressive. On the other hand, Stephane Da Costa was "everywhere" but had no points on six shots.
Two goals for Logan Couture last night... I think this guy could make the team. Also two assists from dman Justin Braun and he's a kid I like, good numbers in the A last year (5+18=23 in 34 games), but he'll likely need an injury to one of the Sharks top seven dmen before he gets the call.
Trevor Lewis with 3A for the Kings last night but this was against a Coyotes split-squad so give it the credibility it deserves.
By all accounts Evgeni Malkin was dominate dominant last night with 1+1=2 and might get 150 points this year... at least based on the hype after one preseason game.
CBJs dman David Savard with 1+1=2 in 26 minutes of action last night... he looks to have first rights of first refusal on the 7th dman roster spot. Keep an eye on him, he was very good in the AHL last season.
Terrible, awful, crappy news here as my favourite sleeper goalie this season, Mark Dekanich, has a high-ankle sprain and is reportedly out for at least four weeks. Now if it is just four weeks then that's not that bad but these ankle injuries can be pretty pesky, especially for goalies... dammit.
Columbus gave R.J. Umberger a five-year $23M extension yesterday... that's not something I would do but maybe that's just me?
Still with the CBJs... Tomas Kubalik left Tuesday's Ex-game with a concussion. This will hurt his chances as he was probably pretty close to making the team.
Mark Streit is the new captain of the Islanders... good for him but how bout he just worry about staying healthy this season? One of my fantasy teams is counting on big things from him.
Steve Sullivan only played 44 games last year, mostly due to groin injuries, so be worried when you hear that he missed practice on Tuesday with a tight groin.
Predators prospect Roman Josi has a UBI and could be out for a while, likely crushing his chances to make the team out of camp.
Alexei Yashin has signed to play with CSKA in the KHL for this season... so no NHL return, yet!?!
The Flyers locked up Sean Couturier to an ELC after his fine preseason debut on Tuesday... unless something drastically changes and the Flyers make some room for him then I can only see him getting nine games max before heading back to the Q.

Cam, I assure you I had nothing to do with the Dekanich injury. However, I can’t speak for Al Montoya or his whereabouts last night.
damn you…. damn you I say!

“By all accounts Evgeni Malkin was dominate last night”
This is something A LOT of hockey fans do and it drives me absolutely nuts :)
dominate = verb “I can dominate”
dominant = adjective “I was dominant”
Huuuuuuuuuge pet peeve for me. Sorry, I’m always in editor mode. Work damage, etc.
stupid
so I try to mock everyone else and make a huge ass of myself in the process… pretty standard post for me. Good catch.

Like Frattin he is looking good.
Thnk its going to be very hard for him to make the team but he is playing great. Guys like Kadri, Colburne and dupuis probably have they edge but he has been playing well. Along with BOzac who i am very impressed with.
Nice to see Modano hang em up it was the right time. with a cup right over 500 goals he is bound to be in the hall of fame sooner or later.
Two of my favourite breakout picks (Dekanich and Josi) go down in the same night. Damn you injury god.
Still holding out hope for both of them.
