Friday's Daily Dosage - Doughty, Ribeiro, Jagr...
You wait long enough and you get what you want... that's the lesson here... as long as your name is Drew Doughty. He re-signed with the Kings last night on a eight-year $56M contract. He could be a step behind having missed training camp but it wouldn't surprise me if he comes out with a spur in his saddle to show everyone how good he really is.
Mike Ribeiro showed no mercy with the Panthers last night as he had 1+5=6 in 14 minutes of ice-time. Alex Goligoski also had 1+3=4 for the Stars. Ribeiro leads the league in preseason scoring with 2+8=10 in four games as Dallas has been flying in the exhibition season.
Jose Theodore was lit up for seven goals on 37 shots last night and has now given up 12 goals in his two preseason appearances. This is noteworthy as with Clemmensen out injured for 8 weeks and Tyler Plante being sent down yesterday, Jacob Markstrom looks as though he'll start the year in the NHL and could get some decent playing time if Theodore isn't up to snuff.
Jaromir Jagr with another goal last night on a setup from Claude Giroux and Jagr leads all players in the preseason with four goals while only having played in three games. Giroux has seven assists in four games so far.
Both Steven Stamkos and Brett Connolly with a pair of goals last night for T-Bay... Connolly has been productive in the pre-season with 3+2=5 in four games. There is definitely room on this team for him so he should, at least, get a nine game audition to start the year.
David Rundblad with the winning goal on the PP late in the 3rd period last night. He played 21 minutes with 6:03 on the PP. Craig Anderson stopped 39 of 40 for the win and has looked good in the preseason with a .940 sv% in three appearances.
Thomas Greiss with a 25 save shutout of the Canucks last night and he's taken advantage with Niemi & Niittymaki out by going 4-0-0, 1.25 & .943 in the preseason. It's just preseason but that gets my attention.
Tomas Kubalik returned after missing a few games with a suspected concussion and he had two assists for the CBJs last night.
Jarome Iginla was back on skates yesterday for the first time in about 10 days after resting due to back spasms... so some progress there. But now Rene Bourque is sitting out with a mystery injury that the team claims is not a concussion.
The Wild claimed Nick Johnson off waivers from Pittsburgh so they must see something in him. He's had some points in the AHL but I wouldn't hold out hope for much NHL production.
The notable cuts from yesterday: Zach Boychuk (CAR), Drayson Bowman (CAR) & Michael Leighton (PHI) is on waivers.
ryanbatty from Copper & Blue with a look at the probability that Hall, Eberle & MPS fall victim to the sophomore slump by reviewing a bunch of players in similar situations over the past ten years... worth checking out to get a feel for what the possibilities are.

great stuff, Cam
what’s up with the Dallas Stars? will they be good this year or is this just a case of the pre-season being the pre-season?
i got Doughty in a couple leagues this year as it seems the holdout had owners a little hesitant. couldn’t get him at all last year…nice to see him signed.
Gulutzan is known for his defensive style so I think the offensive outburst in the preseason is an aberration… I expect them to be solid defensively (as long as Raycroft isn’t playing) so they should be ok but I’m not expecting much offensively out of anyone other than Benn, Eriksson, Ribeiro & Goligoski.
Agree on Doughty, even Jay was saying that he thought this holdout was going to be a long one… I told him to stop being such a nervous nancy and get real, didn’t expect him to miss any regular season games.

Doughty's K
So you think he’s worth $7M over 8 years?
I love the player, but that seems like it could be a little high for someone who is still in large part “potential.”
No, I don’t think he’s worth it but you’re talking to a guy who thinks every player in the league is overpaid, it’s only a matter of by how much.

I was a bit worried as both sides seemed to be really digging in their heels. I’m not sure why the Kings made such a big stink about things only to cave a week later.
I guess an extra $200,000 a year really helps hurt feelings though.

Really hope markstrum gets some time for florida.
Seeing this guy in the wjc and all that he looked really big and strong in the net. I think he could be the next Lunqvist. Really hope he gets some playing time.
Joe Morrow
For you deep leaguers, it sounds like Joe Morrow, D will be sticking w/ the Penguins at least for a 9-game tryout. Brooks Orpik is on the shelf (abdominal) and it has created an opening. He could get shipped off to the WHL when Orpik returns. Or not. The Pens haven’t kept their 1st round pick on the big club since 2006 (Jordan Staal).
Morrow was our top ranked fantasy prospect for the Pens…. just saying.

no, he tore a strip off me cause I had Morrow ranked #109, way ahead of Despres at #346 in the Prospects DB.

ha ha
acc. to the Penguins, as of a month or two ago, Despres was their #1 prospect.
their beat writer, Dave Molinari, was on it, too.
i just pointed out that you were going against prob the most Penguins-knowledgeable journalist + the organization itself by not listing Despres…AT ALL!
I know and we probably did underrate Despres a little but I don’t see a lot of offensive upside there… should make the NHL but I don’t think he’ll bring the heat like Morrow will.

Little note down at the bottom of your post about Boychuk and Bowman got my thinking about one of my big breakout picks… Zac Dalpe.
Sounds like he’s flying in the preseason and has been getting a look on Staal’s line.

Attaboy Dalpe…. and, as expected, looks like Anthony Stewart will start on the 4th line.

Good to see the Canes haven’t lost their sense of reality. Always a good idea to bet on the guy competing with Stewart.
