Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #13

The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.

Three Stars of the Week:

3rd Star, from the Dallas Stars, numero 14, Jamie Benn... in only three games, Benn pulled off 4+3=7, plus-3, 5 hits, 4 blocks, and 8 SOG. Might be the most well-rounded forward in the NHL for fantasy purposes. Two goals against Edmonton on Saturday marked Benn's fourth consecutive multi-point game, and he's now top 15 in league scoring. FHS Votes: 2 seconds, 2 thirds.

2nd Star, from the San Jose Sharks, numero 31, Antti Niemi... three games, three wins and only five goals allowed for a stellar 1.62 gaa and .942 sv%. Halfway through the season, Niemi is tied fior 4th overall in league wins has a better gaa and sv% than Carey Price, Pekka Rinne, and Roberto Luongo. Amazing value for where you probably drafted the guy. FHS Votes: 1 first, 2 seconds.

1st Star, from the Ottawa Senators, numero 65, Erik Karlsson... for those of you who may be religious, look no further than Erik Karlsson for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Funny, I always pictured Jesus playing for the Wings. But fortunately, people of all (or no) faiths can enjoy Karlsson's sick bottom line this week: Four games,1+5=6, plus-7, 2 PPP, and 16 SOG. This guy has distinguished himself from all other defensemen as he's almost a point per game player (41 in 43) this season. FHS Votes: 3 firsts.

Honorable mention: Jonas Gustavsson (3 GP, 3 wins, 2.01 gaa, .932 sv%), Craig Anderson (4 GP, 3 wins, 2.41 gaa, .929 sv%), Semyon Varlamov (2 GP, 2 wins, 0.48 gaa and .948 sv%)

Star-divide

Rookie Star of the Week: Cody Hodgson, VAN: His linemates (Hansen and Ebbett) and TOI (around 10-11 min / night) aren't very good but he's still getting the job done with four points this week and nine in his last ten.

HM: Adam Henrique (4 GP, 2+2=4, plus-2, 11 SOG)

Breakout Star of the Week: Alex Pietrangelo, STL - three games, 1+5=6, plus-2, 2 PIM, 12 SOG). He had only 11 points in 37 games, but has six in his last three. After 43 last year, that's more like it.

HM: Sam Gagner (4 GP, 1+4=5, plus-3, 2 PPP), Jonas Gustavsson (3 GP, 3 wins, 2.01 gaa, .932 sv%)

Breakdown of the Week: Corey Crawford, CHI - after Saturday's loss to Detroit, Crawford has lost three in a row and given up 11 goals over that span. Just when we thought he was winning the #1 job back he has a week like that. Look for Ray Emery to capitalize...again.

DHM: Jeff Carter (no points, minus-1, injured), Nicklas Lidstrom (3 GP, 2 SOG, no points), Mike Green (hell on earth).

Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): Lars Eller, MTL - owned in only 3% of Yahoo! Leagues, he had five points last week (okay they all came in one game, but still). His linemates aren't the greatest (Kostitsyn and Moen) but his TOI is up lately and if Montreal continues to slide he might get an expanded role.

HM: Jonas Gustavsson (18% owned, had a nice week but yeah, no, pass.)

Quick?

How is Jonathon Quick not the number 1 star? 3 GP, 1 W, 2 GA, 0.66 GAA, .967 SV%, 2 SO

or at least on the list.

That’s like asking how Harper got elected. Democracy is a strange and horrible thing sometimes.

Kidding aside though, there were eight goalies who had more wins this week, so I’m thinking that’s why Quick was overlooked.

He only had one SO but even still he’d still make an excellent choice for the three stars.

I didn’t pick him because of the 1 win. Need more wins in fantasy hockey.

yes 1 SO, my mistake.

It should’ve been the monster over Niemi. A shutout is generally worth a lot more in fantasy hockey than the one less goal that Niemi gave up.

Unless your ballot was spoiled, there’s not much I can do now.

I try to avoid voting for Leafs whenever I can.
