Fantasy Stars of the Week - Week #17

Mike Smith in perfect position to call the penalty shot if Schlemko can't help himself.

The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.

Fantasy Stars of the Week

3rd Star, from the Pittsburgh Penguins, numero 71, Evgeni Malkin... we might as well just assume Malkin will be in play here every week. Copy, paste, done. Geno put on a show again this week, with 3+5=8, plus-6, 2 PIM, 11 SOG, and 3 PPP in just three games. Five of those points came in Saturday night's 8-5 barnburner vs. Winnipeg. I am thinking seriously about starting a new feature called Malkin of the Week. Kudos to Diomedes7 for leaving Malkin off his list this week because "he missed the EN-er". Awesome. FHS Votes: 3 seconds

2nd Star, from Malkin's Penguins, numero 58, Kris Letang... Letang snapped a six game pointless skid with consecutive three point games, tallying 3+3=6, plus-4, 2 PIM and 2 PPP in three games overall this week. He has 29 points in 32 games and would be battling Karlsson for the D-man scoring lead if not for the 21 game vacussion. FHS Votes: 1 first, 3 thirds

1st Star, from the Phoenix Coyotes, numero 41, Mike Smith...Smith is on a huge roll again, going 4-0 this week while stopping 119 of 122 shots for 0.74 / .975 peripherals. Not bad for a guy who went unclaimed on waivers TWICE a while back. After allowing just one goal each game against the Red Wings, Stars and Flames, Smith capped off his week with a 38 save shutout against the Hawks. If you own him in H2H, congrats on owning the goalie categories this week. Smith now sports 22 wins with a 2.33 GAA and .925 SV% on the year. FHS Votes: 3 firsts.

Honorable mention: Ryan Callahan (4 GP, 5 goals, 16 SOG, 3 PPP), David Perron (6+1=7, plus-5, 4 PIM, 3 PPG)

Star-divide

There was quite a mixed bag of votes here, so this week we're gonna run with Michael Benedicks' picks for Rookie, Breakout, Breakdown and FA, and we'll back him up with the HMs.

Rookie Star of the Week: Brayden Schenn (PHI) - over four games this week, Schenn finished with three goals, four PIM, 10 SOG and a plus-3 rating. Schenn has six goals in his last ten games and his TOI/G is creeping up to the 16-17 minute range. His PP times this week: 3:23, 2:08 and a team-high 4:54 against the Rangers. Very much worth noting.

HM: Jeff Petry (3 GP, 1+3=4, plus-2)

Breakout Star of the Week: David Perron (STL) with 6+1=7, plus-5, 4 PIM, and 3 PPG. He basically carried the Blues all week, scoring in all four games and accounting for almost half his team's goal production. Despite the goal output, he took only ten SOG, so if he can keep up the 60% shooting percentage he'll only need 67 more shots to hit 50 goals this year. You're welcome for figuring that out.

HM: Max Pacioretty (3 GP, 4 goals, plus-2, 2 PIM, 15 SOG)

Breakdown of the Week: Marian Hossa with 0 points and minus-3. Though you could pick practically anyone on the Blackhawks for this "award". In his last six games, Hossa is pointless and minus-6, but he's still tied for eighth overall in league scoring.and overall this year he's been fantastic.

DHM: Niklas Backstrom (0-3, 3.04 GAA, .878 SV%)

Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): David Jones with 2+3=5, plus-4 and just 6% owned in Yahoo! He's followed up a promising season (27 goals) with a really disappointing one. Apparently he's trying to salvage a lost season

HM: Joey MacDonald (16% owned, 4 GP, 3 wins, 1.97 GAA, .918 SV%), David Perron (18% owned, see above)

And now for the biggest honour of them all. The real glory starts right here, as I'd like to congratulate baxpens on winning the inaugural FHS Saturday Night Live! over/under/pick'em competition! Baxpens picked both the winner and the over/under correctly in an impressive seven of twelve games, and beat out 19 other entries for the big win. You can see how the whole debacle unfolded here. More on the next one coming soon.

Cheers. After my SNL-documented disappointment this past weekend in finding that screen name “Kenny Bloggins” had already been used many times over on the web, I am stoked that “vacussion” has apparently never been used before today. Take that, Kenny Blogginses!
