The biggest and brightest from the past week in Fantasy Land, as voted by FHS writers.
Three Stars of the Week:
3rd Star, from the Tampa Bay Lightning, numero 16, Teddy Purcell... someone has to take care of Vincent Lecavalier's business while he's away, but Purcell really went above and beyond with 3+7=10 in four games, with five of those points coming on the powerplay. Purcell had a fairly decent breakout season in 2010-11 with 17+34=51, 196 SOG and 21 PPP, but a lot of guys woud look alright playing with Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis. FHS Votes: 2 thirds.
2nd star, from the Dallas Stars, numero 32, Kari Lehtonen... after playing in 69 games last season with no significant injuries, Lehtonen missed four weeks and 12 games earlier this year. This seems to have been only a hiccup in his resurgence, and last week saw him win all three of his starts, including a shutout vs. Colorado and an unlikely come-from-behind win vs. Vancouver. How good was he? His three wins, 0.98 GAA and .965 SV% helped me sweep all four goalie categories in the FHS Beta H2H League, while facing down a tandem of Henrik Lundqvist and Mike Smith. Oh, and my other goalie was Matthieu Garon. Yep. FHS Votes: 4 seconds.
1st Star, from the Ottawa Senators, numero 65 Erik Karlsson... I've run out of superlatives and Jesus comparisons for Karlsson. He had this week's 1st star wrapped up before the puck dropped in Ottawa yesterday. In four games this week, he had four goals, eight assists, 13 shots, four powerplay assists and a plus-5 rating. As per Michael Benedicks, Sam Gagner is the only other player this year to net 12 points in a week, and no one else was even close. Let's just give him the damn Norris trophy now. FHS Votes: 4 firsts.
Malkin of the Week: I had threatened before to institute the Malkin of the Week award, and this week seems as good a time as any. The Malkin of the Week award goes to... Evgeni Malkin, for his goal of the year, and also for posting 5+2=7, plus-3, 4 PIM, 17 SOG and 3 PPP in only three games! He actually tied Purcell in votes this week, but there is no Purcell of the Week award so we gave the poor kid the Star. FHS Votes: 2 thirds.
Rookie Star of the Week: Gabriel Landeskog (COL) with 3+2=5, plus-6, 2 PIM, and 13 shots in three games. In his last 10 games, dude is plus-7 with 51 shots. 51! His adjustment period is coming to a close and the league better take notice
HM: Nope, all Landy.
Breakout Star of the Week: Dustin Brown (LAK) with 4+2=6, plus-4, 2 PIM and 14 SOG in only three games. Amazing what a well-placed trade rumor will do for one's motivation. Or maybe it was the arrival of pimp daddy Jeff Carter. Or maybe it was just about freaking time.
HM: Steve Downie (3 GP, 2+3=5, 2 PIM, 12 SOG)
Breakdown of the Week: Antii Niemi (SJS) - although he did manage a 2-1 win against Toronto, that win was sandwiched by getting yanked twice - against Columbus after allowing three goals on 11 shots, then outdoing himself in Nashville, allowing three goals on seven shots for a SV% of .571. But this was the tail end of a long road trip so he should stabilize at home.
Free Agent Star of the Week (less than 50% owned in Yahoo! leagues): Michal Neuvirth (WAS) with 2-0-0, .944 SV%, and 1.78 GAA at 16% owned in Yahoo! He won both his starts and had to mop up for Vokoun twice. Benedicks and I are both big Neuvy fans and keeper league owners so we're really hoping he gets the starting gig next season.
HM: Teddy Purcell (28% owned)
FHS: Thursday Night Live! Star of the Week: We had 22 entries in the TNL over/under/pick 'em comp this week, and ended up with a tie for first place at 13 points. Congratulations to FHS's own Jay Meyer and some clown named Jsuites for coming out on top! We'll be back this Thursday to defend the hardware. Check out last week's TNL blog here, and watch for tomorrow's post asking for your picks for this Thursday's nine game slate.
