FHS Awards Show - Best Fantasy Rookie

If it wasn't for Jonathan Huberdeau this photo would be much more relevant

Welcome to the third annual FHS Awards Show where we deliver the hardware to those deserving players who helped you to fantasy glory. We polled the FHS writers to get a consensus opinion but we've also included a poll to give you a chance to tell us we're idiots.

Yesterday we gave out the award for the biggest breakdown by a goalie.

Today we're handing out the hardware for our best fantasy rookie. It's our version of the calder but we're more interested in how these guys helped your fantasy team rather than how they help their NHL club.

And the nominees are....

Justin Faulk D Hurricanes
Projected: 0 gms with 0+0=0 with 0 pims & 0 shots.
Actual: 66 gms with 8+14=22 with 29 pims & 101 shots.

His 22 points don't seem impressive but he only played in 66 games (that's a 29 point pace). But Faulk really earned Kirk Muller's trust. He averaged over 22 minutes a game and 3 minutes on the PP.

Jake Gardiner D Maple Leafs
Projected: 0 gms with 0+0=0 with 0 pims & 0 shots.
Actual: 75 gms with 7+23=30 with 18 pims & 79 shots.

One of the few bright spots in another disappointing Leaf season. He wasn't expected to be an NHLer yet but ended up playing more than any other rookie in the league.

Adam Henrique C Devils
Projected: 0 gms with 0+0=0 with 0 pims & 0 shots.
Actual: 74 gms with 16+35=51 with 7 pims & 130 shots.

Henrique took advantage of a great opportunity and linemates and translated it into a calder worthy season.

Gabriel Landeskog LW Avalanche
Projected: 79 gms with 19+18=37 with 58 pims & 158 shots.
Actual: 82 gms with 22+30=52 with 51 pims & 270 shots.

It wasn't so much the 52 points that impressed us as the shots (15th in the league) and hits (19th in the league) did. He ended up as a multi-cat stud.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins C Oilers
Projected: 9 gms with 2+3=5 with 3 pims & 12 shots.
Actual: 62 gms with 18+34=52 with 16 pims & 134 shots
.
You can bet there wouldn't even be a discussion about the Calder if RNH hadn't lost 20 to injury. His 23 PPP make his stats look so sexy. It won't be long before he's a top 10 scorer.

Matt Read C Flyers
Projected: 0 gms with 0+0=0 with 0 pims & 0 shots.
Actual: 79 gms with 24+23=47 with 12 pims & 155 shots.

He finished 4th in rookie scoring but the guys ahead of him were doing it with better linemates on scoring lines while Read was grinding it out on the 3rd unit.

And the 'winner' is....

T1st - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins & Gabriel Landeskog (12 points)
T3rd - Adam Henrique & Matt Read (3 points)
T5th - Justin Faulk & Jake Gardiner (0 points)

(3 points for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd)
