Enjoy the christmas break - happy holidays from us to you. A few notes from last night:
Coyotes 1 Sabres 2
Martin Hanzal scored his tenth goal of the year. He's on a three-game point streak after no points in seven games before that. His regression lately has been obvious, and expect him to miss more games to injury, but let's ignore the real world and check out Hanzal's 82-game pace: 25+37=62, 112 PIM, 234 SOG, 20 PPP, 268 hits and 37 blocked shots. He's also 305-256 (54%) in faceoffs.
Christian Ehrhoff had an assist, his sixth in eight games. He has 22 shots in that span, and has been up over 5:00 PP-TOI in five of those eight games.
Ryan Miller stopped 36 of 37 shots for his, um, ninth win of the year. Still, check out that .924 SV%. Dude has Sochi on the brain.
Hampus Lindholm had a goal and a assist. He has four points and a plus-9 rating in his last five games.
Blue Jackets 4 Hurricanes 3
James Wisniewski had a well-rounded game with an assist, four PIM, three SOG, five hits and a blocked shot. This was his second game back after missing time because that's what James Wisneiwski does.
Jeff Skinner scored a pair and he's on a massive tear with 10 goals in 10 games heading into the break. He's averaging 4.6 shots per game in that span. I had all but given up hope on the 30 goal season I predicted for Skinner, but suddenly that idea doesn't seem so far fetched.
Lightning 6 @ Panthers 1
Martin St. Louis had a big night here (1+2=3, 5 SOG). Victor Hedman had two helpers and that's five points and plus-7 in three games since returning from injury. Cam Collingwood favourite Nikita Kucherov also had a couple of assists.
For the Panthers, Aleksander Barkov had an assist, three shots and two hits in 17:33 TOI, which included 3:13 in the PP. Also went 12-7 (63.2%) in faceoffs. Not bad for a guy who was drafted six months ago.
Islanders 3 @ Red Wings 0
Not a lot to discuss here statistically. Kyle Okposo scored his 12th, and he's having a very Moulson-seque season on Tavares' wing. Okposo is on pace for 26+45=71, 56 PIM and 203 SOG.
Evgeni Nabokov got the shutout and his second win in three games.
Erik Karlsson was the catalyst, with a goal, two assists, plus-2 and three shots. Clarke MacArthur had two assists and has three points in three games after five games with nothing.
Wild 1 @ Flyers 4
Wayne Simmonds scored twice for the second consecutive game, and added an assist, and over his current four-game point streak he has 3+2=5, plus-3, six PIM and 15 shots. That's more like it.
With a goal and an assist, Claude Giroux extended his current point streak to seven games, with four of those being multi-pointers. After a slow start, he's turned it around big time and is no on pace for 73 points.
Steve Mason won his third in a row and his resurrection continues. On the season he is 14-9-4 with 2.35/.923 peripherals. No, really.
Bruins 6 Predators 2
So, Reilly Smith seems to be a nice fit on a line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand. Smith had a goal and two helpers, giving him seven goals in his last nine games. He's worth picking up, at least while Loui Eriksson is out.
Jarome Iginla had two goals, two shots, two hits, two blocked shots, and two giveaways. So it may drive you OCD types crazy that he only finished plus-1.
Missed a few games here so feel free to chime in in the comments. Cheers.
