A fantasized look at the NHL action from Sunday
Who doesn't love it when the Islanders pay a visit?... Chris Kunitz (3+2=5) and Sidney Crosby (5A) each had five points in yesterday's rout. Even more amazing to me was that the Penguins scored six goals and just five players accounted for all 17 of their points?!?... wild.
Matt Duchene did not follow up his four point game from Friday with a five pointer last night but he did manage two goals (including OT winner) on five shots to go along with winning 19 of 30 draws. He now has a goal in three straight (4+3=7) and has a 55% FO% this season.
Semyon Varlamov stopped 36 of 38 to beat San Jose yesterday and is having a good run lately going 3-1-2 with a 2.42 & .925 over his last six games.
Jacob Markstrom is getting beaten early and often these days. Two early goals yesterday and five in total drops his record to 1-4-1 on the season.
Another goal yesterday for Shawn Matthias, he has 4+1=5 over his last six games.
The Habs PP has been clicking lately and not sure if P.K. Subban is the chicken or the egg in this scenario as he had two PPA yesterday and 3+9=12, nine PPPs & 35 shots over his last 10 games. That's hot.
Tip of the hat to Evander Kane for busting his five game scoring slump with a goal on 10 shots yesterday.
Clerical note here... Ray Emery was pulled in the 1st period after giving up three goals on nine shots but his perfect record remains in tact at 10-0-0.
Ryan Johansen has seen 17+ minutes of ice-time in six straight games and has 1+4=5 over that span... confidence is rising.
Derek Stepan scored yesteday and has 3+4=7 over his last six games.
Two more assists for Rick Nash and dude is just on fire with 6+5=11 in six games since returning for his mystery injury.
WTF is Steven Oleksy? The Caps rookie dman scored yesterday and has 1+3=4 in his first four NHL games. I honestly had never heard of this guy until he got called up and after a little digging I can see why as there is nothing in his historical record that would indicate that he's doing this on purpose. He's never been a scorer at any level. The one good thing I'll say about him is that he's not afraid to mix it up as he has 151 PIMs in 55 AHL games this year.
Another 23 minutes of ice-time and 8:43 on the PP for Cam Fowler and yet he sits with just two point in 15 games this year. Remember when this guy had 40 points as a rookie?... I hope you do, it was just two years ago but man is he struggling.
Minor league trade as Jets & CBJs swapped Tomas Kubalik & Spencer Machacek... I'd suggest that neither of them should be on your radar. Both have shown promise in the past but seemed to have regressed this season.
The Kings have called up Tyler Toffoli from the AHL where he seems to be getting the hang of things with 24+17=41 over his last 41 games and is tied with Justin Schultz for the lead in rookie scoring.
