Bloggers Breakouts 2011 - Detroit Red Wings

This guy may be a big Wings fan but he's got nothing on Joe

It could possibly be a little late for another Blogger's Breakout but this one is good and I totally dropped the ball here so need to try to make things right.  Joe Amici, huge Red Wings fan and loyal FHS reader sent me his own version of a Wings Blogger's Breakout post back on September 30th and due to some scheduling conflicts I was going to post it a few days later but my brain escaped me for a while there and I totally forgot about it until now.  Apologies Joe as this is great stuff and we always want to encourage our readers to participate in the content on the site.

We asked Joe answered seven fantasy questions related to the Wings... check below for his answers.

If you're interested in FHS' breakout picks and fantasy take on the Wings check out our draft kit which includes The Breakout Bible, the Fantasy Scouting Report (with SuperStats included) and our Fantasy Prospect Database.

Q1) Detroit's Breakout of the Year?
With the Red Wings' "rebuild on-the-go" style, we are blessed here in Detroit with a breakout player every couple years. This year, breakout is written all over Ian White. The only team White has played for that remotely resembles the offensive power of the Wings is the Sharks, which he was just under a 0.5 point-per-game pace before getting injured. Thats about a 40-point season. With Lidstrom at even strength and the potential to play first or second lie powerplay duties with Holmstrom or Cleary parked in front of the net, the still-young (27 years old) White looks to have a career year.

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on Detroit?
Jiri Hudler is considered Darkhorse in my book. Although he's already had a 57 point year with the Wings, after a year overseas and a sad 37 poiny year last year, most expect about a 45 point ceiling for Hudler. However, he's shown potential his whole career (point-per-game season in KHL and 97 point in 76 AHL games in the '05-'06 season. He's darkhorse because depending on his line assignment, Hudler's ceiling is much closer to 75-80 points.

Q3) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?
Taylor Hall is without a doubt going to be the league-wide berakout player. His rookie season oddly resembles Stamkos' rookie season. When comparing the two, Stamkos had 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points in 79 games with a minus-13 and 181 shots before improving to a 51 goals and 44 assists for 95 points with a minus-2 his sophomore season. Last year, Hall had 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points in 65 games with a minus-9 and 186 shots. The stats are shocking similar and so are the skill levels. Expect big things, and expect them this year.

Blogger's Breakouts 2011 - Detroit Red Wings

Filppula and Franzen. Graham sees one breakout and one breakdown here.

Another day, another BB.  Today we've got Graham (aka Amerinadian) from the great Wings site Winging it in Motown in to talk a little fantasy puck as our Wings expert.

We asked Graham seven fantasy questions related to the Wings.  Check below for his answers and make sure to pay the guys at WiiM a visit.

BY GRAHAM (aka AMERINADIAN) from WINGING IT IN MOTOWN

Q1) Detroit's Breakout of the Year?
I'm assuming you're not talking about bigger players like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. The player that all Wing fans are going to be watching this year is Valtteri Filppula, and from recent reports it sounds like he may be moving from center to wing and will play with Zetterberg and Franzen, at least to start the year. He has been a guy that many fans thought had 70-point potential, but injuries and inconsistent play have hampered him in the past. He knows he needs to produce, and this is his year to show he deserves his $3M cap hit. I think that he hits at least 60 points this year.

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on Detroit?
Darren Helm is beloved in Wing fans' eyes because he works hard, plays in tough situations like killing penalties, and is one of the fastest skaters in the league. However, this year could be the year that he shows an offensive upside that has been lacking. In 2 full seasons he only has 23 goals, but there are many who believe that he could see time as the second-line center by the end of the year, which would result in increased production. Personally, I believe that Helm has 20-goal potential, but it remains to be seen whether this is the year he reaches that mark.

Q3) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?
One guy I've always liked is Mikko Koivu, but he's never had any decent offensive talent around him before this year. The additions of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi should give Koivu some weapons he hasn't had before, and I could see him playing at a PPG pace.

Blogger's Breakouts 2011 - Philadelphia Flyers

Travis is expecting big things from JVR this season.

Today we're lucky enough to have Travis Hughes from Broad St. Hockey in to help us out.  We wanted to take a closer fantasy look at the Flyers and Travis knows his Flyers like nobody's business.

We asked Travis seven fantasy related questions about the Flyers.  Check below for his answers.  Make sure you give the guys at Broad St. a look as well.

Q1) Flyers' Breakout of the Year?
Last year, I said James van Riemsdyk. He didn't really fulfill that -- well, not until the postseason -- but that's okay. I'm going with him again for a lot of different reasons. First off, he has a new contract and definitely feels like he has to perform to earn that money. And the reason he got that contract is because of how confident the team is in him. He'll have a much larger role this season and, if there's any player on the roster that's going to be considered a breakout candidate, it has to be him. Or maybe Claude Giroux, but is improving on a 76 point season really a breakout?

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on the Flyers?
Oh, who knows? It's hard to say ... how many guys on the Flyers are really considered darkhorses? Jaromir Jagr? Hardly. Of the guys who aren't that established as NHL scorers, I'd have to go with Jakub Voracek. I'm not totally confident in him as a breakout pick, but he has the potential. More so than anybody else on the team, at least.

Q3) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?
Tyler Seguin seems to make a lot of sense to me. Sophomore season, he'll get more of an opportunity, etc.

Q4) Player likely to Breakdown on the Flyers?
Chris Pronger
. Chris Pronger. Chris Pronger. And Chris Pronger.

Q5) Best Fantasy Prospect on the Flyers?
Let's just go with Brayden Schenn. I worry about the role he'll be used in this year, which could hinder his production, but he's definitely and without question the best fantasy prospect on the team. Not that we have a ton of young guys hanging around anyway...

Q6) How do you see the Flyers goalie situation playing out this year?
Oh jeez. Uhhhh, Ilya Bryzgalov will start about 65-70 games and Sergei Bobrovsky will be thrown essentially to the curb. So you know, don't take Bobrovsky in your draft.

Q7) Let's talk Jagr. He's looking a bit fat and he's always been a bit of a mystery... what can we expect?
He's looked good in camp and has shown glimpses of being the Jaromir Jagr we all know and sort of love, so I think he's going to have a big season. Of course, the question really is "how do you define a big season?" and I'd answer that by saying I expect a 60 point season. That would make me happy as a Flyers fan, and I think he'll do it if he stays healthy. After all, he's still Jaromir Jagr.

Bloggers Breakouts 2011 - Tampa Bay Lightning

Haaaaaave you met Ted?

We've already have one Tampa expert in for a BB (WB Philp from Hockey Independant was the other) but we're lucky enough to double up as John Fontana from Raw Charge was nice enough to answer seven fantasy questions related to the Lightning for us.

With players like Stamkos, St. Louis and Lecavalier the Bolts have one of the strongest PP's in the league.  That's why I know I'm keen to hear John take on who will be QBing that group this year... among other things.

Like with all our BB's, we recommend you check out Raw Charge.  It's a  great place to go if you have any queries related to the Bolts.

BY JOHN FONTANA FROM RAW CHARGE

Q1) Lightning Breakout of the Year?
Technically, he broke out last year when he finally played consistently in the NHL and was playing with Vincent Lecavalier, but RW Teddy Purcell is the one I'd watch in Tampa. He notched 51 points in 81 games last season with the Bolts, coming on strongest in the second half when paired with Lecavalier. The two should be together to start the season, and Purcell has seen time on the Bolts power play unit this preseason. that should bode well for his numbers.

Q2) Darkhorse Breakout on the Tampa Bay Lightning?
Ryan Shannon. Signed as a UFA from the Ottawa Senators, Shannon may end up in the top-six in Tampa... Or perhaps on the third line (thus why he's the dark horse). He's playing with his mentor, Martin St. Louis, in a system that emphasizes speed and grit.

Q3) League-Wide Breakout of the Year?
I'm not sure about this one. I'm wondering if John Tavares is poised to capture the league's attention this season, but would it be called a "breakout"?

Jordan Eberle playing a full season in Edmonton with the maturing skill around him... That could get real interesting.
