Drew Doughty signed with LA. We wouldn't be surprised if he sticks with LA for a few games this year but wouldn't count on him being there the whole year. Although, as we discussed in an article a few weeks ago, Terry Murray has shown that he's willing to give young dmen a lot of responsibilities so that could bode well for Doughty.
NYI first round draft pick Josh Bailey has been told by the team to find a place to live on the Island, so they must be thinking that he's going to stick with the club this year. I know this a youth movement but rushing kids along is not the way to do it... has to reek of the last few guys they tried to rush to the show... Tim Connolly, Taylor Pyatt and Raffi Torres were all top 10 draft picks in 1999 and 2000 that played in Nassau County as teenagers and never developed as people hoped they would.
Nashville signed goaltender Chet Pickard, one of their first round picks from 2008. He's a few years away from playing in Nashville... well actually the team will probably be in Kansas City by the time Chet is ready but that's neither here nor there.
Colorado has signed dman Nigel Williams to an entry level deal, Williams was a 2nd round pick in 2006. May not make the team out of camp but wouldn't surprise us if this guy is the first call-up when an injury strikes... He's a very interesting specimen, a real beast (6'4", 225) with a bit of a nasty streak and yet has the skill set of a player much smaller. Keep an eye on him.
Interesting interview with Joe Sakic on Denver's KKFN-FM (104.3) where he seems kinda like he might be ready to hang 'em up? "I needed some extra time this year," Sakic said, "It's been a very, very difficult decision to make. I'm hoping to have something here in the next couple of weeks, make my final decision and go forward with it. Whatever that is, I want to make sure it's 100 percent sure." How often do you say it's been a very difficult decision to make or I want to make 100 percent sure that I want to play again... sounds like he's thinking about retiring but wants to take his time to make sure he doesn't change his mind... we could be wrong but its just a hunch. Do you think its any factor that the team is looking weaker than last year, losing his buddy Andrew Brunette, starting goalie Jose Theodore and dmen Kurt Sauer and Jeff Finger (if he's as good as Toronto thinks he is then this will be a big loss for Colorado) and replacing them with Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... In case anyone lost track, Canada's Olympic medal count is at.... drum-roll please.... ZERO. Which leaves us tied for 47th place. Other superpowers with rich histories of Olympic triumphs such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have medals. So let's get this straight, there are countries that have been around, oh what a few weeks and their taking home medals and we can't pull out one measly bronze in like synchronized diving or something? Hell, Even Georgia is on the board (the country, not the state) and given the way the Russians are taking them over, this won't even be a country by the time the games are done.
