Late word, according to The Hockey News, is that Andrej Meszaros has signed an offer sheet at around $5M per season. No word yet on what team. This will be interesting to see who it is and what Ottawa will do... stay tuned.
We thought he might be leaning towards retirement but Joe Sakic has signed up for another year with Colorado. Good move, the 39 year old can still bring it, he's crazy consistent and usually quite durable. He loses his wingman in Andrew Brunette but with Milan Hejduk and Ryan Smyth (who has got to be better than last year), there's still some talent to work with. So feel free to bump Burnaby Joe back up your draft cheatsheet.
In other Colorado news, not that you would assume anything to the contrary, Peter Forsberg is currently rehabbing his foot and told a Swedish newspaper that he probably wouldn't be available to play before Christmas.... or ever (we said that, not him, but he's probably thinking it).
Darren Dreger from TSN says that Mats Sundin might be leaning towards retiring. Dreger also says that the NYI are the 6th mysterious team that is interested. I swear GM Garth Snow is trying to corner the market on 37 year olds, he already has three (Weight, Guerin and Sillinger) for his "rebuilding" team. Vancouver GM Mike Gillis also said that he's prepared to wait for Mats, even if it drags on into the season. Bad move by Vancouver as the chances of Mats going there look slim so probably best to move on (not that there's much else out there).
Anaheim signed RFA Joakim Lindstrom who they acquired from Columbus this summer. He's an interesting one to watch because he's proven that he can put up points in the AHL and Anaheim needs people that can score but he appears to be in a tough spot to crack the roster, especially if Teemu comes back, so he may only see spot duty.
And from the... In desperate need of a 20 point forward for my fantasy hockey team file...
- San Jose has given Jeff Friesen a training camp invite... he's averaged 11.5 points per year over his last two NHL seasons.
- Dallas is expected to announce today that Stu Barnes will retire as a player and become an assistant coach with the team. The 37 year old (hold the phone!... maybe the Islanders are interested?!?) shouldn't have been on anyone's fantasy radar since 1998.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... Steven Stamkos doing a photo shoot, as reported by a very plastic looking Rick "The Temp" (he still looks like a temp btw) on ET Canada. Should we start to get worried that Stamkos will pull a Jim Brown and retire from the league at 25 to work with Koules and Gang as a Hollywood actor?... Stamkos to Hollywood for Wilfrid Brimley (e4).
