So apparently Andrej Meszaros has not signed an offer sheet yet but Tampa Bay has told Ottawa GM Bryan Murray that they intend to pursue Meszaros if Ottawa won't trade him to TB. Once again Koules and Gang come to the rescue of hockey fans dying of news-thirst with this ballsy maneuver. If they wanted to sign Meszaros to an offer sheet of $5M then the compensation would be a first-, second- and third-round pick. TB would have to re-acquire their 3rd rounder from Pittsburgh that they traded for Ryan Malone. TB has forwards to deal but not sure that Ottawa would be interested but if not then they should be able to get their 3rd rounder back and can sign Meszaros to a crazy offer sheet. Can't see Ottawa matching it but it would be a killer to lose Meszaros. Stay tuned, this is just starting to get good.
Nik Khabibulin has informed Chicago that he wants to play 60 games this season (did he specify it is was NHL or AHL games?)... not sure if he's been trapped in Siberia all summer but maybe he didn't hear that they signed Cristobal Huet to a huge deal. As always, GM Dale Tallon has said that he isn't desperate to move Khabibulin, but he is eager. Tallon is playing a serious bluffing game here cause, as we've discussed before, he's got to do something before the season starts and unless he has a move up his sleeve he might end up having to waive Khaby and risk losing him for nothing
Craig Custance of the SportingNews with a quote from Detroit Coach Mike Babcock on how he envisions his lines shaking out: "I'll start Hossa with Datsyuk and Holmstrom and Franzen, Zetterberg and Hudler will start together," Babcock said. "Then you go Cleary, Filppula and Samuelsson. That's as good as any third line in hockey." The big winner here is Marian Hossa as he'll play on the top line and the loser is Filppula who a lot of people assumed would center the 2nd line with Hossa by his side.
Put up a new poll yesterday, to see which one of the current UFAs (minus Joe Sakic as of this week) and future hall of famers will have the most productive season. The last poll ended with an overwhelming majority saying that Toronto shouldn't give Bryan McCabe away and should hold out for a better deal... but that seems unlikely at this point.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... The contestants on the next season of Dancing with the Stars were announced and 82 year old Cloris Leachman is on the roster? Now she's best remember to us as the less than adequate replacement for Mrs Edna Garrett on The Facts of Life. Lets be honest, she couldn't hold a candle to Mrs. G... and if she can't handle whatever Nat, Jo, Blair and Tootie are throwing at her, how's she going to handle Lance Bass' boy-band-turned-cosmonaut moves? I'm mean this guy's a professional, I think he wanted to go to the moon to perfect his moonwalk... now that's commitment. Just watch how Mrs G handles a sticky situation...
