Mid-day update: Chicago has fired coach Denis Savard and repalced him him Joel Quenneville, wow that was fast, Savard must have had a pretty crappy relationship with GM Dale Tallon for them to move on this so quickly... more on this later.
Well we may need to re-think our thoughts on Fabian Brunnstrom after he had a hat-trick in his debut last night... we kinda thought he might be a little overhyped and overwhelmed at first but now we're firmly in love with the F-Bomb and we want you to hear it first that its going to be a 240 goal season for the Swede!.... alright, we jest, but a great start for the kid and just shows that he made a wise choice in Dallas as having Brad Richards feeding you passes is good work if you can get it. If you took a flyer on Brunnstrom, good for you, now the smart GMs will be offering him up right now cause you know other GMs will be throwing themselves onto the bandwagon and might have visions of 240 goals dancing through their heads.
Nikita Filatov has been recalled from the AHL after scoring in both games he played down there. Its been quite a ride for the kid so far... from Russia to Columbus to possibly Sudbury to actually Syracuse and now back to Columbus... we'll see how he handles the NHL if he gets into some games.
Don't be thrown off by Edmonton's 3 goalie caravan right now, Mathieu Garon is the man and has shown it in back-to-back victories to start the year. He's a great option, if available in your league, especially if you're riding a struggling goalie like Peter Budaj, Marty Gerber or Cristobal Huet.
Nikolai Khabibulin got his 2nd start and picked up Chicago's first win last night... he might be a necessary short-term pickup for Huet owners to cover their butts as it looks like these guys will be splitting time for a while.
In one of the juicier match-ups on the whole schedule... its Ove vs Sid tonight in Pittsburgh... tune in if you can cause this is about as close to Magic vs Bird (which was the name of a great video game as well) as the NHL gets.
We took down our old poll, Alex Ovechkin was the majority choice as the #1 overall pick in a one year league although Sidney Crosby was gaining support as time went on. Our new poll wants to find out what rookies you're most fired up about seeing in action this year... we're fired up about seeing them all but if we can only pick one then we're more substance over style so we'll say Jakub Voracek.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):
- Georges Laraque was back last night, spent 5 minutes on the ice, 5 minutes in the box, collected his paycheque and went home.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... we can't let go of The Def Leppard Incident and we're glad to see others feel the same way... Chris Chelios was on WCSX-FM and thinks, "Someone should have drove that guy, he did that on purpose" when pressed if he really thought that Joe Elliot put the Cup upside down on purpose, Chelios goes on, "No, we know he did ... we talked to people at the show and the guy was being real rude to everybody. He was in a bad mood when they got there, so for whatever reason he didn't want to be there. And that's his way of showing it and taking it out on the NHL."
Well I guess the biggest rub in all of this is that Chelios wasn't there to "drove that guy"... can you imagine seeing a 46 year old Chelios tackle Joe Elliot in the middle of a concert starting a huge hockey vs hooligans brawl on stage, everyone pairs off, we can see Gary Bettman having his hands full with the one-armed drummer... that would have been the ultimate start to the season and some much need publicity for the NHL.
