Daily Diarrhea

Thomas Vanek had 3 more points last night and now leads the league with 6 goals.  Might be a surprise to some as people seemed to forget about this guy after he struggled out of the gate last year but he really came on in the 2nd half last year and is continuing towards a 40 or maybe 50 goal season this year.

Nikata Filatov got into his first NHL game and got his first goal... not a Fabs Brunnstrom debut but not too shabby.  If he keeps scoring Columbus may have no choice but to keep him in the NHL.  Hitchcock will probably go easy on the kid to start as he is doing with Jakub Voracek and Derick Brassard, all three of them aren't seeing a lot of ice time but are putting up some points... whereas RJ Umberger is seeing a ton of ice time and only has 1 assist through 4 games so far.

Vancouver has waived Kyle Wellwood, not sure what's next for the kid, will probably have to slog it out in the minors for a year before he gets another chance.

NJ sent Anssi Salmela down to the AHL, should just be short term, they want him to get some ice-time since Brent Sutter hasn't used him too much.

Lots of goalie juggling is starting to happen... stay tuned as jumping on these early could help you land a #1 goalie on the cheap:

  • Pekka Rinne got his first start for Nashville and gave up 3 goals on 8 shots and was pulled before the 1st period was over... so despite not starting that well, Dan Ellis looks safe for a while.

  • Miikka Kiprusoff was, once again, not too sharp last night in a loss to the Oil and now sits with a 4.69 gaa and a .843 sv% through 4 games.  Wouldn't be surprised to see Curtis McElhinney tonight and if the kid does well then could see Iron Mike ride him for a few games.

  • Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers got the win last night over Calgary and it would appear that he's proven he can handle the #2 job, so its just a waiting game now with Dwayne Roloson until he gets traded.

  • In a bit of a surprise, Andrew Raycroft is going to get back-to-back starts.  Wouldn't worry too much if you're Peter Budaj, well except for the fact that you've been shitting the bed so far.

  • This is the surprise of the night... Joel Quenneville is going with Nikolai Khabibulin as his starter in his first game behind the bench... this battle is getting spicy!

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • NJ's not giving up the goods on Brian Rolston's sprained ankle, so lets call it day-to-day but it could be a little bit longer than that.
  • Chris Mason had emergency appendectomy surgery on Thursday night... he'll be out for at least 2 weeks.
  • Milan Michalek missed last night's game with an upper-body injury, no word on the extent.
  • Sheldon Souray left the game with a knee injury, which the team says is not serious, but we'll have to wait and see.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... Thank God for Jason Blake... really glad Toronto didn't get rid of him cause if they had then we might actually be winning some games this year and that doesn't help the team's rebuilding plans at all... Blake took the 3rd shot in the shootout last night and despite his best effort couldn't get it on net, so Leafs Lose!  Is there anyway we can decline the loser point?
