The big news today is that Yahoo has updated their position eligibility for a few players... so guys like Tkachuk, Marleau, O'Sullivan, Franzen, Mueller all get Wing eligibility added to their existing Center eligibility. This gives added flexibility to anyone who already owns these guys or makes them a much more attractive FA add if they're on the waiver wire. We had been hoping this would happen and we mentioned it in our fantasy hockey draft tips a while back... hopefully more will be added soon.
Mike Richards had 4 assists (a few of the pretty variety) as Philly picked up their first win of the season.... he had a couple on the PP, where he is always dangerous. He and Jeff Carter are going to have to pick up the slack now that Briere is out... see below.
It was the 6th straight start to kick off the season for Jason LaBarbera and he recorded his first shutout last night. LA is looking pretty solid defensively as they sit 2nd in the league with the fewest shots against (23.8 per game), which even surprises us & we're on record as saying that we're big fans of Terry Murray.
Alex Auld gave Anaheim a 4-0 lead last night and finished with 28 saves on 32 shots in the loss... so would assume that means Marty Gerber goes back in net tonight.
In other goalie news... Nikolai Khabibulin is expected to get his 2nd straight start tonight and Peter Budaj is expected to get his 3rd straight start.
Columbus only played Nikita Filatov for 2:54 last night... now we're not going to argue that he should get more ice time, that's coach Hitchcock's decision, but if we're the GM then he goes back to the AHL today cause the kid needs to be playing somewhere.
Keith Ballard had 3 assists in 27 minutes of ice-time last night and now has 8 points in the first 7 games this year, so he looks like he's thriving under new head coach Pete DeBoer.
Bryan Little only had 1 assist last night but the responsibilities he's getting from John Anderson are so encouraging... he's on the 1st line, played 20 minutes last night and led the team with 9:27 of PP time.
Keith Tkachuk went goalless last night so the streak is over but he's still at a goal-a-game pace for the season & he's worth a pickup now if he's got wing eligibility in your league.
Toronto is sending Jiri Tlusty down to the AHL, he was pointless in 7 games and needs to see a little more ice time and maybe get his confidence back. Jeff Finger is ready to unleash his full $3.5 million dollar arsenal on the league tonight.... prepare yourself Leafs fans.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):
- Daniel Briere has a torn abdominal muscle (aka ripped abs, the bad kind), will need surgery and is on the shelf for 3 to 4 weeks.
- Manny Legace has a hip flexor (see below) and is day-to-day for now but it could be more serious.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... incredibly unfortunate but humorous story out of St. Louis:
Goalie Manny Legace slipped on the carpet walkway that was on the ice last night, hurt his hip and had to leave the game after the 1st period. The carpet was on the ice so that VP candidate Sarah Palin could drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff. No word on Legace's political affiliation (actually he's Canadian) but he didn't blame Palin for the injury, "She's been pretty good for our game, I'm starting to like her more and more. No grudge."
WTF?... you 'like her more and more'?... she just sent you on a magic carpet ride to the injured reserve. Man, hockey players are so like the nerdy guy in high school that when a popular girl finally talks to them they will do anything for her even though she's a total bitch and just uses them... Cmon Manny, stand up for yourself, the chick took you out cause she probably knows you're of no use to her... next thing you know she's calling you for rides to the mall or wants you to get her and her friends booze.
