Niklas Backstrom hasn't lost yet in 7 starts and his coach Jacques Lemaire says that he's only going to get a rest if he asks for it, so look for Backstrom to handle a large workload this year and take note Josh Harding owners.
Cristobal Huet had another weak night giving up 3 goals on 18 shots in the loss, so look for more of Khabibulin in the next little while.
Chicago did call up Cam Barker yesterday and he played last night but only 13 minutes and he didn't see any PP time... hopefully that changes soon.
Chris Drury looks to be getting the funk out, he only had 1 point in his first 9 games but now has 4 points in his last 3, including 2 goals last night. Tom Renney never wavered, he's been consistently playing over 20 minutes a night and now he's lining up with Naslund and Zherdev so he should be back on his typical scoring pace, 60+ points, in no time.
Caught some of the Columbus-Anaheim game (one of the few as the arena looked empty) last night and still wondering what Jake Voracek needs to do to get more ice time, this guy is awesome. Had 1 assist in under 14 minutes of ice-time but did lead Columbus forwards in PP time. As suspected, Columbus has sent Nikita Filatov down to the AHL.
In another case of a guy who needs more playing time, saw Kyle Okposo get his first goal of the season last night and the kid looked great ripping off 7 shots on goal in only 13:47 of ice time (which was a season high)... but not sure why the NYI insist on making this kid sit and watch while old-timers like Weight and Guerin get quality ice time.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):
Rick DiPietro is day-to-day with a lower body injury that the team says is unrelated to his previous injuries, oh great, so he's now got a bad groin/ankle/foot to go with his bum hips and knees. Yeah, 12 more years of this is a great idea.
Brent Burns left the game last night with a lower body injury... stay tuned.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... Just found out about this great promotion that St. Louis is running where kids can get into the game Wednesday against Carolina for free if they're wearing a Halloween costume... well thats nice for the kids. Oh and adults get in for half price if they're wearing a costume! Sweet deal... count us in... now for a costume, I'm thinking given Gary Bettman's way with marketing the NHL and his keen sense of timing (see planning 15 games on the same night as the World Series, booking Def Leppard to kickoff the season and showing up on Wall Street during a freefall, etc.) that I'd go to the game as Gary Bettman wearing this shirt...
Only potential complication would be if Gary himself shows up wearing this shirt....
Then my cover would be totally blown & I'd be looking mighty silly.
