Daily Diarrhea

If you're drafting today or later this week then grab a copy of our updated FREE Fantasy Hockey Rankings and take a look at our Fantasy Hockey Draft Tips to get your strategery all set before D-day... Good Luck.

In games that really matter (finally):

  • Tyler Kennedy took over for Petr Sykora on the 2nd line and potted 2 goals, including the OT winner.  He'll be back on the 3rd line when Sykora returns.
  • Alex Goligoski was scratched for the opener, if he's scratched again today then start to worry.
  • Henrik Lundqvist looked sharp in net for the NYR, especially in the 1st period when his defense gave guys like Vinny Lecavalier and Steven Stamkos point-blank chances.

Looks like St. Louis will keep Alex Pietrangelo around for at least 9 games to start the season... wouldn't recommend picking him up but he has been impressive in the pre-season and they need help on defense.

Calgary cut Mikael Backlund and sent him back to Sweden after going pointless in 5 pre-season games... not surprising, the kid wasn't ready... now the real test begins, if this kid is going to develop into a top player then he should be dominating the Swedish 1st division this year... until he does that, we won't be convinced.

Max Pacioretty was sent down to the AHL by Montreal after an impressive training camp, look for him to be back up for good part way through the year.

Philly released Bryan Berard... didn't see why they needed him given that they've got Timonen and Mike Richards on the point on the PP.

In the spiciest demotion of the day... goalie Ondrej Pavelec was cut by Atlanta but he's told the team that he won't report to the AHL.  Check out these quotes from his agent Allan Walsh:

''When Ondrej signed two years ago, [Altanta GM Don Waddell] gave Ondrej his word. He sat there at the table and gave Ondrej his personal word that Ondrej would never be held back''

''Last year he led Chicago to an American League championship. This year he played in the first exhibition game and then the third period on October 3 -- they threw him into the game cold in the third period. That is criminal mismanagement of a young goalie.''

''He will never be part of an organization that doesn't keep its word and treats players in this manner.''

Love it... stay tuned, this is getting good.

Possible Line Combos:

  • Teddy Purcell is looking like the man to fill in for Patrick O'Sullivan on the LA #1 line with Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown... we guessed this might happen, which is why we have Purcell ranked #19 in our top 50 breakout candidates in the Breakout Bible 2008.
  • Look for Devin Setoguchi to get some more chances on SJs #1 PP unit this year... kid's a sniper.
  • One of Mathieu Schneider, Ron Hainsey and Tobias Enstrom is going to be the odd man out of Atlanta's #1 PP unit and based on pre-season ice-time, its looking like its going to be Enstrom.  Don't write him off just yet but if this guy is not putting up PP points then he's really not worth having in your lineup.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • Petr Sykora missed the opener yesterday with a groin injury, we'll see if he's ready to go today.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... the NHL kicked off the regular season in euro once again... in something called the NHL Bridgestone Premiere... based on the action yesterday, they should have got Apple to be a sponsor, that way they could call it NHL Apple Turnover-Fest 2008... there was some bad hockey going on yesterday.  On the bright side, the best part about games in Europe is the music. I mean, at a game in North America, how many times can you hear Gary Glitter, Metallica or [insert lame dance song here]... but in Europa they're not afraid to bust out classics like the Scorpions, Acqua and Herbie Hancock... they have no shame and neither do we in saying that we love it.
