Daily Diarrhea

If you're drafting this week then grab a copy of our updated FREE Fantasy Hockey Rankings and take a look at our Fantasy Hockey Draft Tips to get your strategery all set before D-day... Good Luck.

Some late news today:  Patrick O'Sullivan has signed with LA, Blake Wheeler is staying up, but Cam Barker, TJ Hensick and Gilbert Brule are headed down... more on these tomorrow.

The circus act that is Koules and the Gang in Tampa Bay holds a lot of potential for entertainment and they are delivering already:

  • Despite everyone telling them that they needed help on defense, "GM" Brian Lawton and coach Barry Melrose kept saying that they liked the kids and everything was fine... until they decided to sign 37 year old Jamie Heward and stick him into the lineup for both games on the weekend.
  • They got shelled to the tune of 80 shots in two games over the weekend and only their goaltending saved them from a huge embarrassment.
  • Barry Melrose is already using the "call out your players" card... its only game #2!!! "Our guys are trying to win without working, and that doesn't happen," Melrose said, "I hope our guys were embarrassed by that second period, I'm sure our ownership and management were."
  • Then since the weekend they sent dman Vladimir Mihalik down to the AHL after playing in the first two games and then shipped Shane O'Brien off to Vancouver for Lukas Krajicek.... oh no, no panic here... business as usual for Koules and the Gang.

As mentioned above TB traded Shane O'Brien and Michel Ouellet to Vancouver for Lukas Krajicek and Juraj Simek.  Avoid all these guys in your fantasy hockey league... O'Brien goes from the team that's probably considering signing Brad Marsh right now to a team that is pretty deep in dmen so not a good move for him and despite being a 1st round pick Krajicek has never proven anything in the pros... except that he can get hurt a lot.

Looks as though Phil Kessel will begin the year on the 2nd line with Bergeron and Sturm.  I'm sure he'll get bounced around but good news that he starts the year out of Claude Julien's dog house.  We like this kid for 30 goals this year so watch out.

Lots of cuts yesterday and there will be a lot more coming today as team's have to submit their rosters by Wednesday, we'll just mention the ones with fantasy hockey ramifications:

  • Chicago cut Corey Crawford, Troy Brouwer, Kyle Beach and Akim Aliu... meaning that Antti Niemi has landed the backup job (assuming Khabibulin gets moved)... we will once again mention that Huet's backup is a good gig, he's never proven to be a workhorse goalie.
  • LA cut Teddy Purcell and Thomas Hickey.  Purcell was a shocker as in the summer Dean Lombardi said he'd be on the team but he was outplayed by Oscar Moller in camp and they're going to keep the kid up for a few games at least.  Purcell will be back in LA soon but this doesn't help his breakout chances.
  • Boston wants to keep Blake Wheeler in Boston but might be forced to send him down because of his big fat contract.
  • Washington sent Karl Alzner and Chris Bourque down, despite strong showings from both in camp... once again its a cap issue here with Alzner and his big fat contract.
  • Lots of 2008 draftees on the bubble... Doughty and Bogosian have made the team, Pietrangelo and Schenn look like they'll start in the NHL and Boedker and Tikhonov look like good bets as well... Hodgson went back to juniors yesterday and Bailey should be going there soon.  Filatov will probably will be heading to the AHL.  Luca Sbisa is the big surprise as it looks like he might crack Philly's opening day roster... can't see him sticking all year but good for the kid.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • Rick DiPietro was back in the nets for the NYI and gave up 6 goals last night... so you could say he's picking up right where he left off last year.... bam!
  • Scott Walker had surgery on his hand yesterday and will be out for 6 weeks... you shouldn't have been counting on him to be healthy anyway.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today...  Just saw an older story from the Denver Post about how Darcy Tucker is "In Heaven" in Colorado...  I'd be in a heaven made out of gold bullion if Toronto paid me $6 million to go away and then I'm making $2.2 million in Colorado after a 34 point season.  Tucker adds these great quotes:

  • "We're adjusting really well and the guys have been great with us. The guys on this team have been really refreshing. We've got a good mix of younger guys who make you feel young, plus a nice mix of older guys you can actually relate to some-times."... Love the "some-times" comment, maybe he's referring to himself as one of the old guys that has trouble relating to the younger guys?
  • "Andrew [Raycroft] and I feel like we're in the 'Field of Dreams', we walked out of the cornfield and into something great."...  Except in the movie the players were all dead and had been banned from the league for gambling...  whereas Toronto is basically paying you NOT to play this year.
