Daily Diarrhea

If you're drafting this week then grab a copy of our updated FREE Fantasy Hockey Rankings and take a look at our Fantasy Hockey Draft Tips to get your strategery all set before D-day... Good Luck.

Late news for this afternoon: In a bizzaro move, Calgary has sent Dustin Boyd down to the AHL even though he was one of their best players in training camp... more on this tomorrow.

Patrick O'Sullivan has re-signed with LA, if you're drafting this week then take him or if he went undrafted in your league then pick him up... he should reclaim his spot on the 1st line, had 53 points last year but post all-star break he was pretty much a point-per-game player and he did that without a ton of PP time (10th on LA).

Boston is keeping Blake Wheeler with the team... sending Peter Schaefer down instead.  Wheels will start on the 3rd line with David Krejci and Chuck Kobasew.  Wouldn't expect much from him this year but he's already exceeded expectations and Boston has some sweet playmaking Cs so he picked the right team.

Rapid fire demotions of the day, expect a lot more today:

  • Chicago cut Cam Barker and Antti Niemi but this may just be temporary depending on what happens with Khabibulin... hopefully, cause Barker especially is ready to play and play well.
  • Chicago also waived Joakim Lindstrom, Anaheim snatched him back off the wire and sent him to the AHL.  Might be time to cut the cord with this guy as he's been passed around this year and nobody wants him.
  • Colorado cut TJ Hensick, tough break for the kid but he should be back up when injuries strike.
  • Edmonton sent Gilbert Brule down to the AHL, this was not unexpected as the kid needs to regain his confidence after spending way too much time sitting on the bench in Columbus.  Not sure when/if he'll be back but we'll keep an eye on him for ya.
  • Detroit just has no room to keep Jonathan Ericsson, Darren Helm and Ville Leino... so they'll go down to the AHL.  Would expect all to be back up at some point but seeing major minutes is probably unlikely.
  • Vancouver has waived Jason Krog, is anyone willing to give the minor league star a chance?
  • Dallas sent James Neal to the AHL, he showed a lot in camp but Dallas is pretty loaded up front.

One of the most interesting stories of the pre-season has been the number of 2008 draftees that are making a strong push to see NHL action this year:

  • Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty are locks to spend the whole year in the league.
  • Zach Bogosian will get a 10 game trial but will probably last the whole year as well.
  • Alex Pietrangelo and Luke Schenn will start the year in the NHL but we'd bet they get 10 games and then head back to junior as their teams aren't playing for much this year and might as well save a contract year.
  • Nikita Filatov could get a few games with Columbus but looks to be heading to the AHL soon... they'd love to send him to the OHL but can't due to the KHL dispute.
  • Phoenix is a real wild card in all of this as they seem to want to field a roster with like 25 rookies... looks like they'll keep Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov up for a while, at least.  Boedker could go back to junior if he's not ready but for now Wayne has him on the 2nd line.
  • Not sure why but the NYI are keeping Josh Bailey around to start the season... hopefully just for 10 games and then let him continue his development in the OHL... don't make us bring up their recent history of "developing" teenagers in the NHL.
  • One that has gone under the radar, since he's missed most of training camp with a wrist injury, is that Zach Boychuk is still with Carolina... looks like they'll keep him until he's healthy and then who know what then since Carolina has a lot of injuries up front now.
  • Looks as though Luca Sbisa has made Philly's opening day roster, especially given the fact that Ryan Parent is out for 3 months... he may just be getting a 10 game trial as well.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • Tomas Holmstrom has an injured foot and missed practice yesterday... he's day-to-day.
  • Bryan Little has a hip pointer and is also day-to-day.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... this happened last week but thought its worth a little more exposure if you haven't seen it yet... great fight between Steve MacIntyre and Jim Vandermeer, well great unless you're Vandermeer's face.  Vandermeer had to pay the piper for busting up rookie Marc Pouliot's face earlier in the game... we don't think he'll try that again... Edmonton's got a new sheriff in town!
