So Dustin Boyd was recalled yesterday, as we suspected, and played last night, so nothing to worry about there.
Big win for Vancouver last night putting up a 6-pack on Calgary... the Sedin's had 5 points between them, Luongo with the shutout and Kiprusoff gave up all 6 and only stopped 17. Not the start that Calgary was looking for.
David Krejci was 1+1=2 last night, including the winning goal... good start for DK. We love this kid, he's our #6 ranked breakout candidate this year in the Breakout Bible.
Florida has sent Shawn Matthias down to the AHL to start the year, tough break for the kid and a little bit of a head scratcher since Florida has so much dead weight on the roster. Appears that Michael Frolik has made the team, for now.
Toronto scratched Anton Stralman last night, hopefully this is just a temporary move as the kid needs to play... maybe once Luke Schenn goes back to junior... but Toronto hasn't even unleashed their secret weapon: Jeff "Pull My" Finger.
Fabian Brunnstrom is expected to be a healthy scratch for the Dallas opener tonight... probably a little to do with not being ready and a little to take some pressure off the kid... wouldn't be too worried but keep your expectations reasonable.
Montreal has B2B tonight and tomorrow so Jaroslav Halak is expected to start Saturday in Toronto. We don't expect Price to get a Brodeur-like workload this year so Halak is a pretty good backup to own.
Timmy Thomas got the win last night for Boston but coach Claude Julien says that he'll probably go with Manny Fernandez on Saturday against Minnesota... the coach has said that he's going to go with the hot goalie so watch this situation early in the season as starts are up for grabs.
I think most people assumed that Mike Smith was the #1 guy in Tampa but coach Barry Melrose is already juggling his goalies and wouldn't reveal who will get the start in their next game Saturday. This is going to be a team that struggles defensively so look for both Smith and Kolzig to rotate for a while.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):
- Philly loses another dman as Randy Jones had hip surgery and is out 6 to 8 weeks. Should mean that Luca Sbisa gets a run of games at the beginning of the year but assume that GM Paul Holmgren is looking for more veteran help back there.
- Daniel Alfredsson is having minor knee surgery and the team only expects him to be out for a "few" weeks.
Distraction of the Day
What's distracting us today... the NHL marketing machine at its finest... they probably paid a shedload of money to get Def Leppard to play an opening night concert in Detroit. Now, have to admit that we liked these guys... in 1987, but the NHL really couldn't find anyone better? What, were the Beach Boys unavailable? Maybe they could have got a band that watches hockey???... cause from this clip its pretty obvious that lead singer Joe Elliot has never seen a hockey game in his life...
Oh no, he didn't just do that.... Oh yes he did.
