Daily Diarrhea

Late breaking news: Barry Melrose fired and replaced by Rick Tocchet... absolutely hilarious... more on this tomorrow.

So how's this for a typical week for Koules and the Gang in Tampa:

  • Get shutout 4-0 in the always heated battle for Florida bragging rights.

  • Barry Melrose has a talk with the boys and they decided that the coach should skip practice on Tuesday (maybe they suggested he go get a haircut?).

  • It appears that the owners are growing alligator arms and can't reach their wallets... rumours that they may have trouble making payroll soon.

  • Highlight of the week so far is that they were beating Detroit 2-1 last night until they took 3 minor penalties in the span of 18 seconds late in the 2nd period and Detroit got 2 PP goals and won the game 4-3.

5th straight start and 4th straight win for Erik Ersberg last night as he stopped 24 of 26 to beat Dallas again.  Hard to recommend a goalie from LA but as we told you the other day this is not your Dad's LA Kings, these guys are playing defense and keeping the shots down, way down.

St. Louis sent Alex Pietrangelo down to his junior club for the rest of the season... smart move, not because he's can't handle the NHL but because of its better for his development and makes long term sense with respect to the cap.

Fabs Brunnstrom was a healthy scratch last night for Dallas, this had been coming for a little while as he only had 1 point in his last 6 games and his ice time had been dropping.

Bad night to be a goalie on a Canadian team:

  • Carey Price gave up 6 goals on 31 shots to Boston.

  • Miikka Kiprusoff saw 20 shark shots in the 1st period and gave up 4 goals and at Mike Keenan's request, watched the rest of the game from the bench.

  • Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers got his first start at home after winning his first 2 starts on the road but cracked under the immense pressure of facing Toronto and gave up 5 goals on 29 shots.

From the "We told you so" file... Joe Pavelski has put up 32 shots in his last 6 games so it was only a matter of time before they start going in and he bagged 2 last night.

From the "We didn't tell you so cause he had no idea so" file... Matt Stajan has 16 points in his last 11 games... he can't keep it up but enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Remember Antti Miettinen?  yeah, those were good times... well he's only had 1 point and 3 shots in his last 4 games... more like it from a guy who has a career high of 34 points.

Kris Letang hasn't exploded like a lot of people thought due to the injuries to Gonchar and Whitney but he has quietly put together a 5 game point streak (all assists) and only 2 of his 9 point overall have come on the PP so once that starts clicking he could take off.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • Kevin Bieksa has a broken foot and is expected to be out 2-4 weeks. With Bieksa out we were going to recommend Sami Salo as a replacement but just read that he missed practice yesterday with a shoulder injury and is day-to-day... should have known.

  • So we have to apologize when we insinuated that Tim Connolly may have a bruised brain, it was actually a bruised chest and he's out day-to-day.... stupid, stupid, stupid.

  • Brent Burns returned to the lineup last night as a forward, we think that will just be a temp thing.

  • Sidney Crosby is playing through the pain of his multiple injuries and had 2 goals last night.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... jeez, when is the NHL going to learn that people in the US don't like hockey because its too violent?  Check out this clip to see the fans in Boston who look absolutely disgusted by the unnecessary roughness... Lucic vs Komisarek.
