Daily Diarrhea

Alright, its the morning after and time to face the facts... its over.  No, we're not talking to you John McCain... we're talking to fantasy hockey GMs who own Marty Brodeur.  Tough to recover from a loss like that.  So what's the fallout from this?  Kevin Weekes is the starter, for now, and its not that this guy is a bad goalie but he just hasn't played enough lately, only seeing action in 23 games over the past 2 seasons.  Wouldn't surprise us if Sweet Lou goes out and tries to get a goalie, possibly a Dwayne Roloson or how about a Jaroslav Halak from Montreal?  At the same time, the recent history shows us that backups can come in and exceed expectations... last year unheralded backups like Ty Conklin, Dan Ellis and to a lesser extent, Tim Thomas, stepped in for #1s when they got hurt and performed extremely well, so don't dismiss Weekes chances just yet.

Quick Hit Goalie News:

  • Erik Ersberg finally got a start in LA and was shutting out Anahiem into OT until Pronger scored on the PP.  This guy deserves more starts, especially given that LaBarbera hasn't been blowing anyone away with his numbers so far (3-5-1, 3.01, .884).

  • Alex Auld stopped 26 of 27 last night to pick up the win over Washington and has firmly cemented his hold on the #1G spot... we may never see Gerbs again?

  • Boston coach Claude Julien and handed the #1 spot to Tim Thomas as a reward for his hot start.

  • Sounds like Pascal Leclaire is out for another week, at least, so Columbus called up Steve Mason from the minors, where he's performed very well.  Norrena should get the start on Wednesday but look for Mason to get one of the starts Friday or Saturday.

  • Why does Iron Mike insist on overworking Mikka Kiprusoff?... he's played every minute of Calgary's 13 games so far.

Mikhail Grabovski had 3 points last night and all 7 of his points have come in the last 6 games and he is forming a decent combo with Niklas Hagman and Nikolai Kulemin on a line we like to call the "Mik & 2 Niks" line for Toronto.

In what can be viewed as a boost for out-of-shape people everywhere, Kyle Wellwood is 6+1=7 in 7 games since being called up from the minors.

In related news about guys named Kyle, Kyle Turris was a healthy scratch last night, Wayne wanted him to watch a game from the press box... it should just be a temporary thing but the part that concerns us is that he's averaging less than 12 mpg of ice time so far with only 2 minutes of PP time... hopefully that will pick up soon.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • Scott Walker and Dan Ellis both returned to the lineup last night after being out with injuries.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... congrats to Barack Obama and 52% of the US people who got what they wanted last night.  To the other 48%... its was a good run and 2nd place is nothing to sneeze at.  In a more substantial victory, Obama is leading our poll as you obviously think he could take McCain in a hockey fight.... as I'm sure someone has said, maybe Fred Shero... if you can't beat 'em in the alley, you can't beat 'em in the White House.
