Daily Diarrhea

Late Update: Brenden Morrow has a torn ACL and is out for 6 months... ouch.  More on this tomorrow.

LA's sinister plan worked to perfection... throw a Russian Heritage Night when Alexander Ovechkin and the Crapitals come to town and entice Ove with a big party the night before, lots of comrades, vodka shots, staying up late watching old tapes of Yakov Smirnoff... and the result?... the hottest player in hockey (14 points in his last 5 games) can only manage 1 assist and goes -4 vs lowly LA.  Frickin brilliant.  In a related note, 28 other teams announced that they will have a Russian Heritage Night coinciding with Washington's next visit.

Erik Ersberg got his 8th straight start and only had to make 19 saves on 21 shots to pick up his 5th win of the season over Washington... his success is all about LA's defensive system which is far and away leading the league in fewest shots against.

Nashville sent rookies Patric Hornqvist and Ryan Jones down to the AHL, they're expected to be down there for about a week to get some playing time and build confidence and then they'll be back up.  We had high hopes for Hornqvist and although he hasn't been a total bust his ice-time hasn't been great, he's been scratched a few times and we thought he'd show a little more touch around the net.

Forget Kevin Weekes, Scott Clemmensen is the goalie for the now in NJ.  He's started 4 of the past 5 and picked up his 2nd win in a row last night stopping 23 of 24.  He hasn't played great but hasn't been terrible either and definitely seems to be preferred to Weekes, so if you picked up Weekes, swap him out for Clemmensen (if you can't find anyone better).

Petr Sykora's numbers are all over the place, his minutes and shots fluctuate wildly but as long as he still spends most of his time as Geno Malkin's wingman, then he's got value.  He started slow this year but has now put together 9 points in his last 8 games so hopefully the rest of his game follows suit.

Slava Kozlov also started slow this year but is on a run now with 9+5=14 in his last 11 games.

They must have replaced Pavol Demitra's fractured rib cartilage with that from the 6-Millon Dollar Man cause he's been bionic since he returned... 7 points in 4 games since he came back.  Enjoy it while it lasts, he's due to get hurt again in the next 32 minutes.

We've been telling you about Jiri Hudler for the last little while and he keeps responding with continued hotness... he's 4+5=9 in his last 7 while never playing more than 13 minutes in any of those games.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page which will give you a consolidated list of injury status):

  • The MRI on Mike Green's should was negative and they're hoping that he'll only miss a week.

  • We thought this was just minor but Marc-Andre Fleury missed the past 2 games with a leg injury and will probably miss their next one as well, he's day-to-day.

  • Tomas Holmstrom sat out last night's game with back spasms. Consider him day-to-day.

  • Brenden Morrow left the game last night with a leg injury, he's day-to-day.

  • We recommended Sami Salo as a pickup this week (& picked him up in our own league) but he can't even make it through the week without breaking down... he missed last night's game with some combo of hamstring and flu.

  • Todd White left the game last night with a concussion and he'll be re-evaluated today.

  • Marek Svatos left last night's game with an abdominal injury and he's being re-evaluated today.

  • Returning to action last night was: Brent Johnson and Mathieu Schneider.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today... so the Claude Lemeiux comeback is on... he started by playing a few games in the Asian League for the China Sharks, a team that's affiliated with San Jose. You know you're starting at the bottom when your comeback starts in China... I wonder if he's been running kids from behind and turtling during fights over there?  Well he must have caught the eye of SJ GM Doug Wilson (I'm sure he scouts all the China Sharks games to find his next call-up) and now there is talk that they're going to bring him over to play for SJs AHL team in Worcester. Its been speculated that since SJ had success with the Jeremy Roenick reclamation project last year, they're willing to see if they can work the same magic with a 43 year old.  Wonder if Wilson's MO behind all this is to make it more acceptable when he launches his own comeback at the age of 51?
