Daily Diarrhea

Lite night in the NHL so we spent some time trying to decipher some of the stupid quotes of the week... fascinatingly, Mike Keenan appears twice:

  • Mike Keenan decides that a game in Detroit is the perfect opportunity to give his rookie backup goalie, Curtis McElhinney, his second start of the year and then says this about him after the game, "It wasn't like we had a barrage of pucks coming at us. That'll be his next challenge as a goaltender, to be able to close the door and come away with the win."  Thanks for that, Captain Obvious.

  • Iron Mike on how great Todd Bertuzzi is, "He's a preoccupation for both defenceman. They can't stop him. I watched (the TV feed) again this morning and the commentator said exactly that."  First, I hope Mike doesn't always base his opinions on what TV commentators say and second, when you say "they can't stop him", we'd reply "Stop what?", Bert's gone 18 games without a goal.

  • That segues nicely into Todd Bertuzzi's quote when asked about his awesome -14 golf score, "Rod Brind'Amour is a minus 21, isn't he?"  Always nice to answer a question with a rhetorical question and throw a fellow player under the bus at the same time.

AverySean Avery won't be playing for the Stars again.  The team announced that when he is done counseling they'll find somewhere else for him to play...which probably means the AHL.  He could end up on another NHL team but we're not convinced anybody would want to take the PR hit...maybe in a few months  Time to cut bait on Avery.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned Anton Stralman to the AHL.  He was a mini-sleeper for us so we're a bit saddened he didn't pan out.  He played in 21 games and picked up seven points.  He'll be back up with the big club one day and looks to be a future PP quarterback.

We took down our old poll, no consensus on who's the better short-term pickup but Scott Clemmensen and Curtis Sanford had a lot of support... since we tend to lack creativity, we just waited until you voted and then we picked up Clemmensen in our league this week... thanks for the advice.  Our new poll wants to know which breakout player will finish with the most points... we like the Gooch cause he's got Jumbo Joe setting his table for him but Kessel and Krejci are gaining ground.

Ferrigno Frolik_headshot We know what you're thinking... again, with Michael Frolik? What are you guys, his agents?  Well, wouldn't be a bad gig cause the kid continues to put up points, 9 in his last 8 games.  He's become a legitimate option in points-only leagues but has a ways to go in standard formats as he doesn't offer much in the way of shots or PIMs.  Maybe we're so infatuated cause he's got this Lou Ferrigno look happening... you see it???  Or have we been watching too much of the old Hulk TV show lately?

Cristobal Huet stopped 31 of 32 shots to give him four wins in five tries.  Even though Joel Quenneville called Huet his back up goalie yesterday we're still convinced Huet will get close to 50% of the starts.

Going up against Huet was Steve Mason...who played his third straight game.  He stopped 28 of 30 shots but lost the game. If you weren't convinced before that Mason was the man in Columbus you should be now.

KeithDuncan Keith picked up two assists last night in a whopping 26 minutes of play.  He now has 14 points in 28 games and five in his last six.  He's not getting much PP time but everything else is going well for Keith right now.

Kevin Bieksa has put together a nice little stretch lately with 6 points in his last 7 games... we like KB, especially when he can stay healthy but whats up with the PIMs this year?  He's usually a 100+ PIM guy but right now he's only on pace for around 50 this season.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

LuongoRoberto Luongo was expected to return to action on Saturday but that didn't happen (we warned you).  The Canucks are being very secretive about the injury.  We've read reports that he could be out for months but Luongo told reporters the injury was nothing more than soreness.  Assume he's week-to-week.  Cory Schneider and Curtis Sanford will continue to spilt the starts till the big guy is ready. [more]

Carey Price's LBI (rumoured to be in the hip/groin region) may keep him out until after Christmas, so Jaroslav Halak is a pretty solid add right now for Price owners or anyone really.

Stephen Weiss left last night's game with an UBI that, according to the coach, "Is not serious"... so consider him day-to-day.

Cory Stillman returned from injury last night.  He played 18 minutes and scored zero points.  The Panthers were taking it really slow with him so we're thinking he's good to go this time.

Distraction of the Day
