Brad Richards added 3 assists to his hot streak last night and that gives him 4+9=13 in his last 7 games and if history tells us anything, its that Brad Richards is always more productive in the 2nd half of the season... in the past 6 seasons he's a .84 ppg player prior to the all-star break and 1.04 after. Grab him now.
For all the Marty Turco jokes that have been thrown around by some or our scouts, some of us are believers and are holding on for a 2nd half revival. Things are looking up for those that kept faith as his numbers in December were very respectable... 8-3-1, 2.52, .906.
3 straight shutouts for Steve Mason. We're tired of writing about how good this rookie's been. As we told you Tuesday, if you can get this guy, make it happen.
We're big fans of Brent Burns here, so his 3 points last night was a ray of hope for the new year. He's struggled so far this season and has the unfortunate lot in life of playing for Jackie Lemaire but the kid is the real deal so now is a great buy-low opportunity.
Big nights for Jarome Iginla and Mike Cammalleri in Calgary as both had 5 pointers. Iggy is as consistent and reliable as they come and The Cammal is having a bounceback year playing for a big contract (he's a UFA at the end of the season).
Sticking with the Flames, with all that scoring last night there apparently wasn't any leftovers for Todd Bertuzzi so he made his own statement with a -3 to bring his team leading minus to 14. That overshadowed the fact that Dion Phaneuf was held pointless again and that's 8 games with zilch and he's a -4 with only 2 PIMs during that stretch... the holidays can be stressful, even for hockey players, Dion's probably grappling over where to send Sean Avery's Christmas card... c/o Dallas Stars? c/o Vogue? c/o Dennis Rodman's house? Who knows where he's at?
Denis Grebeshkov had 4 points for the Oil and may be a viable fantasy hockey option in assists-only leagues but in all others avoid this guy, he's averse to shooting, doesn't take a enough PIMs and is low on the pecking order for PP time in Edmonton.
2 goals last night for Hilary Duff's beau, Mike Comrie, gives him goals in 3 straight and 5 points over that stretch. He's not playing with great linemates (Okposo and Comeau) but those don't exist on the Island so you got to make the most with what you got and get yours on the PP.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
Zach Bogosian returned last night after missing 28 games with a broken leg and is still pointless on the year. You know our position on 18 year old dman (see: avoid).
Also returning to action last night was: Curtis Glencross and Owen Nolan.
What's distracting us today? Hopefully you didn't have too many Winter Classic Wines last night...
...and you'll be able to still enjoy the actual game. We tried to find a hockey video that had something to do with New Years celebrations...this is the best we could do:
We hope you did something more exciting than watch the scoreboard light up at the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena last night.
