Daily Diarrhea

LecavalierWe don't normally dig up the rumours but this one is pretty juicy and would rock the fantasy world if it happened.  Bob McKenzie from TSN is reporting that Montreal has offered the following for Vinny Lecavalier: "Tomas Plekanec, Chris Higgins, prospect P.K. Subban, Josh Gorges and a package of draft picks including more than one first-round pick"  We don't see it happening but it's still crazy.  So how did Vinny respond to the trade rumours last night?  A goal and an assist and that gives him 11 points in his last 8 games so bring on more rumours, we say.

Vinny Prospal continued his point streak last night, making it a lucky 7 now and he's got 9 points during the streak.  Even with this hot streak it still only puts him on pace for 50 points this year, which isn't shocking if you're a believer in the "Prospal Principle", which states that its impossible for Vinny to put together back-to-back big season... here's his point totals the last 6 years: 71, 55, 80, 54, 79, 55.

Brian Elliot will be making his second straight start tonight.  Just another sign that tells us Marty Gerber's days in the capital are numbered.

Jon Quick took over for Erik Ersberg after he let in three goals on only seven shots to Tampa.  Quick shut the door the rest of the way (15 shots).  It's looking like Quick is the go-to man in LA...for now.  Use him if you're desperate.

DatsyukPavel Datsyuk is one of the hottest forwards out there right now.  He picked up three more points last night (and was also a +3) in the Wings shootout loss to the Stars.  He has an amazing 25 points in his last 14 games.  Datsyuk?  More like Datsyummy.  Sorry that was terrible.

Another great interview on Puck Daddy, this time with Nikita Filatov where Nikki says that he thinks John Tavares will be a better player than Steven Stamkos and that Stamkos' 4 goals in 40 games this year is "pretty weak".... nice... alright it's no Mike Tyson saying that he wants to eat Lennox Lewis' children, but as far as hockey players talking smack goes, we'll take it.  Circle those Columbus-Tampa Bay dates on your calendar... this could get bizonkers.

Anze Kopitar is not having a great year but the perception is that he's totally shiiting-the-bed.  He is on pace for around 65 points which for a 21 year old on a last place team is pretty decent.  We just mention this cause sometimes perception is reality for some fantasy hockey GMs so you might be able to get Kopitar cheap right now... in a keeper league, especially, that would be a very savvy move.

Here's a few goalies that may surprise you with their numbers over the last month... take a run at these guys and see if their owners haven't smelled what your steppin' in yet:

  • Cam Ward - 8 wins, 2.36, .910
  • Niklas Backstrom - 5 wins, 1.88, .933
  • Ilja Bryzgalov - 5 wins, 1.94, .941

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

KesselSome pretty big news on the injury front as Phil Kessel was diagnosed with mono.  Estimates are he'll be out of the lineup for about a month.  These guys are going to be crushed (video). As we mentioned in our 'Fantasy Breakout Team' article Kessel has been one of the biggest breakouts of the season. Hopefully, he can keep it going when he comes back.   [more

Alex Steen has a foot injury that will keep him out day-to-day.

Drew Doughty left last night's game with a bruised thigh and didn't return.  He'll be re-evaluated today, but let's take a wild guess that he'll be day-to-day.

Brian Rafalski had a goal in the 1st period last night and then left the game in the 2nd but returned to play his regular shift in the 3rd and overtime, so he may be a little banged up but he's a trooper.

Andy McDonald's ankle isn't healing that quickly, he's been skating on it but doesn't think he'll be able to return until late January.

Luongo Roberto Luongo is back practicing at 100% and although we wouldn't expect Vancouver to rush him, its sounding like he'll make his return sometime this week.

Daniel Briere has been working hard in practice and is targeting a return tonight... we'll see if he gets his wish.

Jason Arnott, Bryan Little and Todd Bertuzzi are all expected back either Wednesday or Thursday night.  Use and activate as you see fit.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today?  Just a couple of small things distracting us today:

  • Looks like EASports put a girl in NHL09...she was in the make-a-wish foundation and her wish was to be a goalie in NHL09.  Pretty crappy wish if you ask us...we'd ask for three more wishes.  Video game nerds aren't happy though.
  • Crosschecks to the back...just a reminder of what we're in for if Claude Lemieux makes it back to the NHL this year.
  • Video Game + Hockey + Pinball = HOCKEYTABLE FUTURE PINBALL...the 'future' looks very boring.
  • Judging from the 'The Adam Foote Song' Blue Jackets fans can really hold a grudge...shouldn't they worry about all the money they are paying Kristian Huselius not to score?
  • Finally, now that the World Juniors are over and John Tavares has been traded we can worry about who is going to go first overall in next June's draft...let's meet the two main choices a little more closely:
