The all-star break for fantasy hockey GMs is like Sunday for God... the day(s) of rest, time to kick back and take a look at what you've accomplished or where you really screwed the pooch so far this year... good luck with that, we'll try to help you out with some tips and advice.
(Ed. Note: Apparently our CPU is taking an all-star break too, despite not being much of an all-star, it doesn't see to be too interested in working... so we'll do as much as we can but make sure to join us tomorrow for another episode of Man vs Machine.)
I don't know about you guys but I really miss all the mystery that surrounded Mats Sundin for the past 6 months... will he? won't he? where he? when the f*ck will he? why do I care? Well it looks like we won't be without those types of questions long as everyone's starting to speculate about a possible return by Peter "The Great (expect for my feet) Forsberg. He's already said that if he'd return it would be to Colorado but now Philadelphia has said that they're interested and you know a few other teams will throw their hats in the ring (we're looking at you, Glen Sather) when push comes to shove. We just tend to avoid Foppa since he's as breakable as they come and we prefer to sleep at night but if you've got a deep bench and he's available in your league then... go crazy.
Ottawa placed Marty Gerber on waivers and we'd be surprised if anyone wanted this guy for free. You know you've hit rock bottom when you're a goalie and Ottawa is waiving you and the Islanders are passing cause they'd rather start Yann Danis. Look out Europe, Gerbs is coming home baby!
Dany Sabourin already cleared waivers and now Edmonton has to figure out what to do with him, they don't really want him but looks like they'll send him to their AHL team in Springfield.
One guy who we've been liking lately is Jakub Voracek, we were very keen on this rookie leading into the season and its been hard to tell so far if he's really been struggling or if Ken Hitchcock's been holding him back. His ice-time hasn't increased dramatically but he is up to a steady 14 or 15 minutes a night lately and his production has followed suit with 2+5=7 in his last 7 games.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
So the Danny Briere news just keeps getting worse, first it was a return was imminent, then it was a few games in the AHL before he's ready and then that surgery might be needed and two weeks to recover and finally we get to... he had the surgery and it will take 4 weeks to fully recover... son of a biatch and shiit... If you thought that we're taking this one a little hard, yes he is on our fantasy team.
A couple of bigger names that have been out for a while are lining up to return shortly after the all-star break... Andy McDonald (pardon the Lanny McDonald all-star jersey, it just looked cooler) has been back practicing and despite having a scare the other day, he's been feeling good, Rob Blake's been skating with a face shield to protect his jaw and if he can play with that he should return shortly and Chris Higgins has been skating for a while and should jump back into the lineup within the first few games after the break.
What's distracting us today? Not much going on really. We're looking forward to the NHL SuperSkills Competition. Not that's it very exciting, it's just that there's no other NHL hockey to watch. In case you have forgotten about all of the fun at last year's event here's a video to get you into the skill comp mindset:
