Daily Diarrhea

StLouis Marty St. Louis isn't really putting together the streaks lately but he is scoring in bunches with a lot of multi-point efforts and since Jan. 1st he's 7+15=22 in 19 games, with a lot of shots (so many that we lost count)... so he could be a nice trade target as you get ready for a playoff push.

Sometimes when we're right, we're right... we've been telling you about David Backes a lot lately and with 2 more points last night he has 9 in his last 10 games.  Let's just be clear, guys who might approach 30 goals and 50 points do not, we repeat, do not typically top 200 PIMs and that is what Backes is attempting to do.

Sometimes when we're wrong, we're right... we told you about Dany Heatley's head-in-ass season yesterday and he must have heard us in there cause he responded with 2 goals last night.

Sometimes when we're wrong, we're wrong... we told you to grab Antero Niittymaki yesterday since he took over the #1 job in Philly but then we goes and wets himself last night and gives up 5 goals to Ottawa's ECHL-level offense.

& Sometimes we're wrong and we don't even know it... who knew that Niklas Hagman was hot right now?... he's 4+5=9 in his last 7 games, so should you pick him up?... hell, what do we know?

Timonen Kimmo Timonen is having a less than stellar 2nd half so far... 1 point in his last 10 games and his 3 goals and 67 shots on the season are really making this a down year for KT overall.  He could be playing hurt, as he's been known to do, since he did have ankle issues this year.

On the flipside, Kevin Bieksa is having himself a sneaky-good season.  He's been heating up lately with 2+7=9 with 15 PIMs in his last 8 games and quietly sits in the top 20 in scoring amongst dmen and that's after missing 9 games already this season.  We've been trying to get him in our league but his owner is holding to him, and rightly-so.

Phoenix sent Kyle Turris down to the AHL... rough rookie season for the kid with only 16 points, numerous scratchings and not a lot of ice time.

Don't look now... we said, don't look... but Stevie Stamkos has 8 points in his last 12 games and is starting to come around.  Only problem is that he also has two scratchings in there, but its not about this year, its about what he's going to do next year and this latest stretch is a good sign.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

Weight We made a tasteless joke about Doug Weight leaving the game early yesterday (due to his age and going to catch Matlock, i know, we're so stupid sometimes), well isn't our face a little eggy now???  Guess Dougie actually really was hurt, sprained MCL, and that will keep him out for the next 6 weeks.... good thing he has Medicare since that will cover his hospital expenses.

Nikolai Khabibulin is out with a minor LBI that will probably keep him out of tonight's game but there is talk that he could return for Saturday's game, so no need to panic just yet.

Chuck Kobasew is out day-to-day with the dreaded UBI + LBI = FBI (Full Body Injury).

Returning to action from the injured list last night was: Rod Brind'Amour and Oscar Moller.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today?  A loyal reader pointed us to this story on Barstool Sports (pat on the pants to Fred):

"Philip Samuelsson of the Chicago Steel (USHL) has committed to Boston College. Samuelsson will be arriving at the Heights this coming fall, and is hoping to win some fans in a city where his father, former NHL defenseman and current Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson, is still vilified for his career-ending hit on Bruins wing Cam Neely (though Neely has reportedly said that the specific career-ending hit may  have occurred on a previous play, when Neely hit Samuelsson."

All we can say about that is WTF?  Is BC run by morons?  You don't disrespect Cam like this and you don't disrespect the people of Boston like this, nobody in New England wants to watch the spawn of Ulfie 'play hockey'.  This would be like Doug Flutie's son starting at quarterback for Notre Dame and beating BC in the championship game on a hail mary and then calling the Pope an old-gay-fart... there would be rosary beads through TV screens throughout New England.

For a little refresher on the history between Cam Neely and Ulf Samuelsson, see the two videos below:
