Fantasy Fortnight - Who's Hot and Who's Not

New, 2 comments

Each week (or so) we'll dip a toe in the fantasy pool, test the water, and find out which players are hot and which ones are not over the past fortnight (that's two weeks).
(Statistics cover the period from Feb 14th to Feb 25th)

Lidstrom, Nicklas D DET 7 3 4 7 1.00 On pace for 58 points…down from last year's 70

Toews, Jonathan C CHI  7 5 4 9 1.29 Mini-slump (1 point in 5 games) is a distant memory
Heatley, Dany RW OTT 7 8 1 9 1.29 1 goal in 8 games, then 8 in 8
Vermette, Antoine LW OTT  7 2 7 9 1.29 20 of 28 points in last two months
Bourque, Rene RW CGY  4 3 2 5 1.25 Should more than double last years output…now that's a breakout
Kostitsyn, Andrei RW MON 6 4 3 7 1.17 Kostitsyn finally waking up.  How long can he keep it up?
Roy, Derek C BUF 6 3 4 7 1.17 Who needs Vanek?
Kane, Patrick RW CHI 7 3 5 8 1.14 After a 2 point, 12 game stretch he's picked up 11 points in 12
Burrows, Alexandre C VAN  7 2 5 7 1.00 7 points are nice…add in 25 PIM's and it's very nice
Gonchar, Sergei D PIT  6 2 3 5 0.83 Almost like he never missed a game
Schneider, Mathieu D MON 5 2 2 4 0.80 Four games with Montreal…three points.

PICK UP OF THE WEEK:

MATHIEU SCHNEIDER D MON

Usually we try to recommend a young guy with some nice upside or emerging skills.  Not the case today.  The 39-year old Schneider looks to have rejuvenated Montreal's power play...the team is 7 for 17 since his arrival.  Don't forget this is the Montreal team that was one of the most lethal on the PP last season.  Last year, Schneider was playing at a 50 point pace and he season before he was at 60...he's back on a team that has some talent so he should definitely improve on the 29 point pace he's sporting now.  Assuming he stays healthy (never a guarantee with Mathieu) he would make a great add.  He's only owned in 44% of Yahoo leagues so he might be ready for the picking in your league.

Honourable Mention: Andei Kostitsyn, Tomas Plekanec, Martin Havlat, Alex Burrows, Sergei Gonchar,

Timonen, Kimmo D PHI  5 0 1 1 0.20 Only two points in 14 games
Niskanen, Matt D DAL 6 0 1 1 0.17 8 points in 5 games…1 point in next 7

Harrold, Peter D LA 8 0 0 0 0.00 Picked as a breakout by a different fantasy site
Schenn, Luke D TOR 7 0 0 0 0.00 Not a good sign for Leafs when their best player does this

DROP OF THE WEEK: MARKUS NASLUND W NYR

Check this out...104, 84, 79, 60, and 55.  Those are Naslund's point totals the last five years. If he keeps up his current pace (47 points) his downward spiral will keep going for a sixth year.  It always seems when a player signs a big (unwarranted) deal his draft spot goes up,  We hope you didn't get sucked into the the hype on Naslund.  He's on the downside of his career and we don't see him getting better any time soon.  When you look at his recent record things are getting any prettier...only three points in 12 games.  You may not want to drop him but try to move him to a desperate owner.

Dishonourable Mention: Miroslav Satan, Mike Comrie, Matt Niskanen and Clarke MacArthur.
