Gainey Montreal GM Bob Gainey figures if his team is going down in flames then he might as well go down with it... or something like that.  Gainey fired coach Guy Carbonneau yesterday and will assume the coaching duties for the rest of the season.  Gainey did the same thing a few years back when he fired Claude Julien and took over the team only to have them choke in the playoffs and lose to Carolina in the 1st round.  Look for Gainey to try to fix the PP, which Carbs had at the top of the league the past two years but fell to 18th this year, and commit to defense as the Habs gave up too many shots under Carbs.  We'd also expect Gainey to throw full support behind Carey Price so we'll see if Price runs with the ball when its given to him.

We told you about Cam Ward yesterday and he responded with a shutout last night and pretty much all the forwards on Carolina are producing right now... we'll single-out Ray Whitney for special mention as the old guy is still putting up numbers with 4+9=13 in his last 10 games.  Even the dmen are getting into the act as Anton Babchuk is 5+4=9 & +11 in his last 10 games.

Purcell We had high hopes for Teddy Purcell this year and we were crushed when he didn't make the team out of camp.  But the undrafted rookie has proven resilient as he went down and did his thing in the AHL (38 points in 38 games) and is now appears to be up with the big club for good as he has a five game point streak going (2+4=6) while playing with Kopitar and Brown on the 1st line and on the #1 PP unit.  The kid is definitely one to watch for next year.

Despite two PP goals last night Jarret Stoll's play lately has tailed off as he's only had four points and been a -9 in his last ten games... must be tough being Rachel Hunter's boy-toy.

Another goal last night for Alex Burrows and that give him 6+5=11 in his last 10 games.  He's a solid play right now as long as he's with the Sedin's as in addition to the points he provides a nice PIMs & +/- contribution... we just wish he'd see a little more PP time.

The point totals will be down this year but hopefully you didn't bail on Dany Heatley as he struggled through some rough patches in December and January as The Heater has warmed and has 10 goals in his last 13 games and is on pace to reach the 40 goal level for the fourth season in a row.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

Horton God must really want to see what the Florida Panthers are made of cause he's dealt them a few injuries at a time when they are locked in a heated battle for the playoffs.  Nathan Horton had surgery on a busted digit and will be out about two weeks and Bryan McCabe has an eye injury and will be out at least two games.

Fabian Brunnstrom left Sunday's game early and he's listed as day-to-day with a shoulder injury.

No returns last night but we're expecting to see Danny Briere and Tomas Holmstrom make returns tonight and Detroit is also hoping to have Marian Hossa back on Thursday

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today?  Ronny Wilson called for the stick check on Jason Spezza's spear last night and the gamble paid off as it was deemed illegal.  Love it, not just cause it was the Sens but because who doesn't love a stick check?... we need more of those.  Hell, you should be able to call a pad check on the goalies during a game as well... but that's a whole other issue.  This got us thinking about our all-time favourite stick check calls... and after many hours, all we came up with was one... which is proof that either stick checks don't happen enough or that we've enjoyed vodka too much... or both.

This video has the added benefit of plenty of mullets and a helmetless Kerry Fraser.
