Daily Diarrhea

Jokinen Only a few interesting deals at the trade deadline yesterday.  Probably the most intriguing was the Flames acquisition of Olli Jokinen from the Coyotes.  This scout is a big fan of Jokinen's as he's typically a 5/6 category fantasy contributor who never gets hurt.  He's had an off year in Phoenix but hopefully a trade to a strong team where he can slide onto the top line with a player like Jarome Iginla will activate some more production.

The losers in the big Flames deal are Craig Conroy who was actually the interim #1C and was doing a decent job with nine points in his last seven games and Matthew Lombardi who had been filling in on the top 2 lines and was playing his best hockey of the year with 10 points in his last 11 but he won't be playing with anywhere near the talent in Phoenix.

Other players who get a fantasy boost as a results of yesterday's moves include Erik Cole who we expect will be re-united with Eric Staal on the top line in Carolina after a less than impressive stint with the Oilers.  He could be worth a look if he's available on your waiver wire as it should be a quick transition back to familiar surroundings.  Another player to watch is Bill Guerin as the Penguins seem to have a thing for washed-up Islander wingers.  We expect Billy G to get a shot to ride shotgun with Crosby (when healthy) and that will be a slight upgrade from playing with Dean McAmmond and Jon Sim... we hope.

One player who we predicted to be a loser after the deadline was Manny Malhotra but miraculously (or maybe typically) Columbus kinda missed the boat yesterday and while they desperately needed a #1C, they ended up with Antoine Vermette... let's just say Tony's not the answer and it sounds like Hitchcock isn't even going to start with Vermette on the 1st line.  So Malhotra keeps his job for now and gets a chance to continue his hot streak with 4+7=11 in his last nine games.

Lalime Another player who we thought might end up a loser after yesterday was Patrick Lalime but it sounds like the Sabres addition of Mikael Tellqvist is more to give Lalime some relief as opposed to take over the #1 job while Ryan Miller is out.  Lalime was great again last night and while only posting one win in his last six appearances he does sport a rather snappy 2.01 gaa & .940 sv% over that stretch.

Jaroslav Halak was supposed to face Lalime last night but couldn't go due to the flu.  So that thrusted Carey Price in there and he looked like he had some sort of illness as he gave up five goals on 27 shots to the Sabres.  Price has just been a horror show lately giving up 25 goals over his last five starts (all losses)... we can't recommend that you dump Price yet but you should do whatever you can to get Halak as cover and hope for a Price bounceback asap.

We mentioned washed-up Islander wingers before and that describes Miroslav Satan rather well as the Penguins finally discovered that guys who stink it up on the Island do not deserve promotions to Sidney Crosby's wing (until they traded for Billy Guerin yesterday).  Pittsburgh finally sent Satan down the AHL after he cleared waivers, its possible he gets another chance but we think you can put a fork in him.

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

Toskala Toronto decided that Vesa Toskala should implement an operation shutdown for the rest of the year as he'll have hip and groin surgery and will get an early jump on the four month rehab schedule... good thing they picked up Marty Gerber to fill in for him... now they can actually go toe-to-toe with the goaltending that tanking teams like the Islanders and Avalanche are throwing out there.

Marian Hossa's latest neck injury doesn't sound that serious.  He's recovering nicely and the Wings expect him to be able to return next week sometime.

Two Sabres returned to action from the injured list last night: Thomas Vanek was back after missing nine games with that jaw injury and Maxim Afinogenov was back after missing 24 games with a mix of groin injury and healthy scratchings.

Distraction of the Day

What's distracting us today?  A pretty uneventful trade deadline (thank god for the Flames).  Well if you didn't get your trade fix then maybe you should check out the Eklund Rumour Generator (thanks to KK for the link).  It's pretty much as accurate as Eklund's real site but much more entertaining.

Here's some of the trades we randomly generated that would have been more entertaining than what happened yesterday:

Kane to Coyotes? (e2)

According to sources within the Chicago Blackhawks organization, the Phoenix Coyotes are willing to part with D Ed Jovanovski and a 2nd round pick to obtain the services of RW Patrick Kane. Remember, you heard it here first!

Gonchar to Canadiens? (e4)

According to sources within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, the Montreal Canadiens are willing to part with RW Alexei Kovalev and a 2nd round pick to obtain the services of D Sergei Gonchar. Remember, you heard it here first!

Vanek to Rangers? (e5)

According to sources within the Buffalo Sabres organization, the New York Rangers are willing to part with G Henrik Lundqvist, a rusty zamboni and a 3rd round pick to obtain the services of LW Thomas Vanek. Remember, you heard it here first!

Zetterberg to Wild? (e2)

According to sources within the Detroit Red Wings organization, the Minnesota Wild are willing to part with C Mikko Koivu, a 5th round pick, G Niklas Backstrom and D Marek Zidlicky to obtain the services of C Henrik Zetterberg. Remember, you heard it here first!

Looks like we might be entertained for the next little while.
