Daily Diarrhea

Holmstrom Tomas Holmstrom is one to keep an eye on for your playoff pool as he's returned from injury, reclaimed his place on the Red Wings top line and the points just magically appear.  He's had five assists in his last three games and looks to be a staple on the #1 PP unit.

One thing that's starting to concern us is how Henrik Zetterberg is a little off lately... after a 92 point season last year he's only on pace for 73 this year and is struggling with 1+3=4 points in his seven games.  He was huge last year in the playoffs but he seems to have taken a step back, possibly due to not playing with Datsyuk as much.  Hank has been centering the 2nd line between Franzen and Cleary.

Habs coach Bob Gainey stuck with Jaroslav Halak after two straight wins, despite Carey Price being fit enough to dress last night.  Halak only stopped 20 of 23 and coughed up a 3rd period lead in the loss to the Senators... look for Price to be back in net tonight against the Rangers.

Kostitsyn Andrei Kostitsyn sat out last night's game, he had a facial injury that kept him out of Saturday's game but this is sorta sounding like a healthy scratching... which shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone as he's only managed one goal and two points in his last 17 games.

We all know Mike Keenan loves to shuffle his lines so all combinations have a short shelf life but he seems to be reverting to using his three big forwards together on the 1st line.  He's got to get Mike Cammalleri going as he's struggling with only two goals in his last 15 games but that may come at the price of losing any chance at production from Todd Bertuzzi as Bert has only one goal in his last 14 games.

So this is what it's come to... due to salary cap restraints Calgary is dressing less than an full lineup to save on the cap hit.  Last night they dressed 17 skaters (one less that a full lineup)... never heard of somebody doing this, guess desperate times call for desperate measures.  Wouldn't surprise us if Darryl Sutter's next trick is to only dressed one goalie next game, hell Kiprusoff plays every game so who needs a backup?

Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):

Markov Big and Bad news for the Montrealers as they got word yesterday that Mathieu Schneider is shutting it down for the year due to a shoulder injury and Andrei Markov is out for three weeks with a knee injury.  Word is that they're considering bringing Larry Robinson out of retirement to replace these guys.

The Habs head to New York tonight for a big tilt with the Rangers and they have a few issues of their own.  The latest is Nik Antropov who left their last game with a knee injury, so he's questionable for tonight.

Dennis Wideman has an injured leg and won't play tonight against Ottawa.  With Boston having clinched the East, look for them to start resting guys in prep for the playoffs.

Returning to action from the injured list last night was Adrian Aucoin.

Daily Distraction

What's distracting us today?  Apparently the baseball season started recently?... wow, someone should give us the heads up about that... seems like last season just ended and spring training has only been going on for, what, like six months now?  This scout doesn't have much love for America's past-time ever since I blew like six months worth allowances on 100 Todd Zeile rookie cards (they're still available if anyone is interested).  No matter, we can always appreciate a good fight between two mascots at a minor league game... who you got... the Woodchuck or Slider???...
