Zubrus joins the ZZ's and burns the Leafs... Knuble & Vanek turning it on... Downie not a liability... rollercoaster night for Green owners... more BUSHKORN!
Zach Parise and Travis Zajac burned the Leafs last night with four points each but it was a another Z, Dainius Zubrus, that caught our eye as he joined them on the top line and was 1+2=3. He recently returned after missing 30 games with a leg injury and has been a bust in Newark since arriving but if he can stick with these guys and they can play the Leafs every night (they get them twice next week) then he's someone worth watching.
Mike Knuble started the year producing well below expectations with only seven goals in his first 30 games but he, along with the Caps in general, have turned it on lately as he has 11+3=14 in his last 12 games.
We've been talking up Thomas Vanek lately as it looks like he might be ready to go on a 2nd half tear... he had a PP goal last night and that's three in his last five games and he has 5+4=9 in his last 11.
Alex Auld started and won his second game in a row last night as he stopped 24 of 26 to beat the 'lanche. He's started five of the last seven for Dallas (winning four of those five) and is making a push to steal the #1 job from Marty Turco.
This season has been a bit of a write-off for Valtteri Filppula after missing close to two months with a broken wrist but he's returned and has been looking good lately with 1+5=6 in his last six and 2+10=12 in his last 15. So if you need even-strength assists and not much else, give him a look.
Steve Downie is a PIM machine, with 22 last night he now has 149 on the year to sit 2nd in the league, but we've had our eye on his point production lately as with a respectable 5+8=13 in his last 17 games he's not a total liability in your lineup if you've got him in there for those PIM explosions.
Injury Updates (see our Injury Updates page for a consolidated list of injuries):
Rollercoaster night for Mike Green owners as he took a big hit from Cory Stillman and then retaliated with a nasty elbow to Mike Frolik that only ended up being two minutes but could land him a suspension. Then later in the game he went knee-on-knee with Kulikov and had to be helped from the ice. Initial suspicions were that it could be serious but the word now is that he only has a charley horse and may not miss any games (that is if he's not suspended)... well, that was stressful. UPDATE: Three game suspension for Green.
Josh Harding re-aggravated his hip injury in Thursday night's game but stayed in there cause he had the shutout going... we'll see if he's good enough to go today, otherwise we could have a Dubie Dubielewicz sighting.
Jaroslav Spacek is day-to-day with a UBI.
ME Vlasic left Thursday's game with a LBI and he's listed as day-to-day.
The Kings Jack Johnson has a UBI and it questionable for today's game in Boston.
Scottie Upshall picked up a knee injury on Thursday night, this one is sounding like it could be serious and he's still be evaluated... stay tuned.
Returning to action from the injured list last night was: Marc Savard and Jason Williams.
What's distracting us today? When in doubt, go back to BUSHKORN!... in this episode, he says things aren't very groovy in LeafsLand (or whatever world he lives in)...
